The University of Redlands baseball team hosted the University of British Columbia (CAN) in an exhibition contest on Monday afternoon.  While utilizing a variety of different players throughout the course of the game, the Bulldogs fell to the talented Thunderbirds, 5-14.

On the mound for the Maroon and Gray, freshman pitcher Reinert Toft (Davis, CA) garnered his first-career collegiate start, going two innings for the Bulldogs.

The Thunderbirds were able to put up five early runs thanks to a two-out rally in the first frame, and eventually led 11-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning.  That is when the Bulldogs erupted for five runs.

Leading off the inning, sophomore right-fielder Nathaniel Acosta (Chino Hills, CA) launched a long homerun over the left-field fence and into the street.  A few batters later, the bases were loaded for sophomore shortstop Jordan Dresner (Etiwanda, CA), and he blasted a long sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in the second run of the day for the Maroon and Gray.

Later in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore catcher Sean McMillan (Redwood City, CA) and senior designated hitter Petter Overton-Harris (Beaverton, OR) ripped a pair of RBI singles to bring the Bulldogs to within six.

That would be as close as the U of R would come, however, as strong Thunderbird pitching silenced the Bulldog bats over the final two frames.

UBC's freshman starter Jeremy Newton (Toronto, CAN) put together a solid performance, going five innings while distributing just six hits and giving up no runs.

Freshman second baseman Mark Tumlinson (Topeka, KS) provided another solid effort at the plate for Redlands, going 3-for-3.  Additionally, Acosta finished 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Redlands (2-5) travels to Caltech on Friday afternoon for a single game at 2:30 p.m.  The Bulldogs then return home on Saturday for a doubleheader with the Beavers.  First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
