Bulldog Baseball Falls to Occidental College

Sophomore centerfielder Alex Scheiwe (Encinitas, CA) went 2-for-3 at the plate and made a pair of diving catches, but it wasn't enough, as the University of Redlands baseball team dropped a 4-18 eight-inning decision to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe Occidental College on Saturday.

The Tigers jumped out to an early lead as they scored nine runs in the first two frames. Junior right-hander Paul Dippel absorbed the loss as he surrendered eight earned runs on six hits in just 1.1 innings of work.

The Bulldogs were held scoreless for the first four innings of action, as Occidental starter Joseph King earned the win after pitching 6.0 innings and allowing three earned runs on six hits.

Redlands got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when senior shortstop Chase Tucker (Poway, CA) led off with a double in the gap to left-centerfield. Junior first baseman Eliot Smith (West Linn, OR) singled him home on a base hit to right field.

The Maroon and Gray added another pair of runs in the sixth on a Scheiwe double, followed by an RBI-triple by freshman right fielder Connor Hancock (Burbank, CA). Hancock later scored on a sacrifice fly by junior designated hitter Marcus Himelhoch (Portland, OR).

Despite cutting Oxy's lead to seven at 10-3, the Bulldogs never fully recovered, as the Tigers tallied another three runs in the top of the seventh and pushed the game out of reach with a five-run, eighth inning.

The Bulldogs travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Sunday for a single game against the Stags. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
