Redlands Baseball Tops Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Weekend Series Finale

The University of Redlands baseball team completed a three-game series against the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges with an 8-3 victory at the Yard on Saturday.  After dropping their first two contests to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe, the Bulldogs rallied for a comeback win to finish out the weekend on a high note.

With senior pitcher Adam Byrd (Bullhead City, AZ) on the mound, the Maroon and Gray pieced together four scoring frames, while shutting out the Sagehens in seven stanzas.  Byrd earned his fourth win of the season, fanning four Sagehens and distributing eight hits in 7.1 innings of work.

In addition, the Bulldogs connected on 13 hits and took advantage of five Pomona-Pitzer errors.

The game-changing frame came in the bottom of the fifth when Redlands put up a three-spot to break a one-all tie.  Junior designated hitter Marcus Himelhoch (Portland, OR) connected on the Bulldogs' third consecutive hit of the inning, scoring sophomore center-fielder Alex Scheiwe (Encinitas, CA), who had led off with a double.  Senior left-fielder Trenton Lively (La Verne, CA) and senior short stop Chase Tucker (Poway, CA) also provided well-timed RBI for the Maroon and Gray.

In the eighth inning, Redlands made the most of four Sagehen miscues, scoring another three runs to shut the door on any comeback efforts by Pomona-Pitzer.

Leading the Bulldog offense, Scheiwe and freshman right-fielder Connor Hancock (Burbank, CA) registered three hits and two runs apiece, while Himelhoch and Lively collected two RBI each.

Earlier in the day, Pomona-Pitzer uncorked a seven-run performance in the fourth inning en route to a 10-6 victory to start off the doubleheader.

During the game-one loss, Hancock shined for the Bulldogs, going 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs.

In addition, the Sagehens began the series with a 17-0 triumph on Friday.

Redlands (14-13, 8-10 SCIAC) hosts the Beavers of Caltech on Friday in a 3 p.m. SCIAC game.
