Redlands Athletics rank No. 88 in Learfield Directors’ Cup Final Standings

2022-23 Learfield Director Cup Standings

REDLANDS, Calif. - The University of Redlands Athletic Department found themselves inside the Top-100 in the final Division III Learfield Directors' Cup standings for 2022-23, coming in at No. 88 announced by the Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) earlier this week.

The Bulldogs collected 215.00 points on the year with 122.00 of them coming in the spring (2023) and another 93.00 in the winter (2022-23).  From a year ago Redlands added an additional 46.50 points to their winter total and over the past three seasons the Maroon and Grey have finished inside the Top-100 in the final Division III Learfield Cup Standings (2018-19: No. 72 | No. 2021-22: No. 49 | No. 2022-23: No. 88).

Redlands was the third highest ranked program in the Learfield Cup Standings within the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) trailing only Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (No. 10) and Pomona-Pitzer (No. 21).  If you combine the SCIAC and the Northwest Conference the Bulldogs would rank No. 4 in the standings with George Fox (No. 31) being the only school from the NWC above the U of R.  Redlands was also two spots behind UC Santa Cruz (No. 86) and ahead of Colorado College (No. 92), the other two Division III schools in the West, outside of Texas.

Following a fall where there were no points accumulated the winter sports got the U of R on the board collecting 93.00 points from three different teams.  Swimming & Diving produced the most points in the season with 38 thanks to Tom Jansen who qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the 1650 Free becoming a 2nd Team All-American in the event finishing ninth overall with a time of 15:35.59.  This was a 7.58 second drop from his personal best, while at the same time he set the school records in the 1650 Free and the 1000 Free.

An additional 30 points came courtesy of Indoor Track & Field with Ciara Aw qualifying for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the Long Jump.  She finished sixth overall with a mark of 5.58m/18'3.75", which earned her All-American accolades.

The final 25 points in the winter sports came from Women's Basketball who claimed the SCIAC Tournament Title, qualifying them for the NCAA Division III National Championships.  This was the second time in the past four years the Bulldogs have made their way to the national stage (2019-20) and the third under Head Coach Rich Murphy.

In the spring Redlands had two teams who combined for the 122 points with 72 of them coming from Women's Golf after a sixth place finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships where the team shot a 951 (320-327-304).  Individually, Hannah Jugar was the NCAA Division III National Championship Runner-Up with scores of 75-80-72.  The team ranked inside the top three nationally all season, won six tournaments on the year and qualified for the National Championships for the fourth time in the past five seasons.

The final 50 points came from Softball who put together a remarkable 2023 campaign winning the SCIAC Regular-Season Championship Title and then rolling through the SCIAC Tournament as the No. 3 seed to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships for the second time in the past three seasons.  They were forced to travel to the Pacific Northwest and the McMinnville Regional where they took on No. 4 Linfield University falling in a best-of-five-game series.

There are more than 400 schools competing under the NCAA Division III banner and 323 of those schools scored points in the Directors' Cup standings in 2022-23.  Directors' Cup points accumulated can vary by sport based on the size of a team bracket or the number of teams that score points at a particular NCAA championship (note the difference between the fifth-place finish in men's lacrosse (70 points) and women's tennis (73)).

About the the Learfield Directors' Cup
The Learfield IMG Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.  Through the course of the year, Directors' Cup points are awarded based on a school's finish in up to 18 sports – nine men and nine women – in NCAA Championships.  New to the scoring structure five years ago in Division III, men's and women's soccer and men's and women's basketball must be included by every school in their scoring total.  Previously, the top nine men's and women's scoring teams could be counted; now, regardless of whether a school's soccer and basketball teams qualify for the NCAAs, they must be counted.
