Redlands Volleyball Wins SCIAC Championship with Sweep over Whittier

With a solid three-set sweep of Whittier College earlier tonight, the University of Redlands volleyball team clinched its first-ever Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) championship and looks forward to hosting the inaugural SCIAC Postseason Tournament.  The Bulldogs cruised to a 25-21, 25-17, 25-16 victory with solid play throughout the match.

Redlands (20-4, 12-1 SCIAC) is the first team other than the University of La Verne or Cal Lutheran University to win the SCIAC championship since 1993. Earlier this week, the Bulldogs nabbed at least a share of the title with a sweep of Caltech, but tonight’s victory gives them sole possession of the championship with one match to play.

By winning the conference title, the Bulldogs also earn the right to host the semi-final matches of the first annual SCIAC Postseason Tournament on Friday, November 6, at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The highest remaining seed hosts the final match on Saturday, November 7, with the winner earning the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.

The Bulldogs currently boast the second-most win total in Head Coach Mari Burningham’s six-year tenure. In 2006, Redlands went 22-7 en route to its historic Sweet-16 run at the NCAA tournament.

The Maroon and Gary next travel to La Verne for its final match of the regular season on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
