U of R Women’s Soccer battles Stevens at Engineering Cup

HOBOKEN, NJ – The University of Redlands Women's Soccer team opened up the Engineering Cup Friday with a 4-1 loss to host Stevens Institute of Technology.

The Bulldogs continue to seek their first win of 2022 as they drop to 0-2.  They got off a strong start against the Ducks in the opening 45 minutes playing to a draw at the break.  Stevens had the better run of play in the first 25 minutes that led up to the opening goal in the 26th minute.  But :46 seconds later the Maroon and Grey found the equalizer off the foot of Sabrina Semmere (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA), who was found by freshman Alex Zerbel (Redlands, CA).  Up to that point Redlands had not attempted a shot or a corner, but still found themselves in the matchup.

The second shot of the game for UR came from Celine Akroush (Pasadena, CA) who forced the first save out of Duck goalkeeper, Kendra Donley in the 30th minute.  Another highlight for the Bulldogs in that first half was holding the Ducks to just one shot in the final 19 minutes, while freshman Kelsey Williams (Murrieta, CA) would tally the final shot of the half, a look that was on target with only :36 second left.

Beginning the second half the Ducks found the early pressure, which resulted in a goal, which put them on top 2-1, giving them a lead in the 50th minute.  Stevens then put the game away with another two tallies coming in the 60th and 64th minutes, while taking the first six shots of the period, three of which found the back of the net.

The Bulldogs' first shot of the half was in the 73rd minute from Sami Salinas (Foothill Ranch, CA). Redlands got a corner in the 76th and Salinas got on the end of it, but her shot was blocked.

Shannon Stewart (San Jose, CA) made her first collegiate appearance in relief of her older sister Courtney Stewart (San Jose, CA) in the 80th minute. In just over 10 minutes, S. Stewart made two saves to help keep the score at 1-4.

Overall, the Bulldogs had their hands full defensively as they got outshot 16-5, including a 10-3 mark on shots on-goal.  They did however hold the 5-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Bulldogs play game two in New Jersey against the No. 2 team in the country, The College of New Jersey (1-1-1), on Sunday, September 11 at 9:00 a.m. pacific time.
