U of R Women’s Basketball Celebrates Senior Night with 65-47 win over Caltech

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team wrapped up the 2021-22 regular season Wednesday night inside Currier Gym with a solid 65-47 win over Caltech.

The Maroon and Grey have been red hot over the last few weeks extending their winning streak to five games as they finish the regular season 18-4, 14-2 SCIAC.  They have won seven of their last eight heading into the tournament and they await their opponent between Cal Lutheran, La Verne, and Occidental.  Against the three teams the Bulldogs combined to go a perfect 6-0 against them during the regular season.

Prior to tonight's game Head Coach Rich Murphy recognized his four seniors, which included Alyssa Downs (South San Francisco, CA), Chyanne Pagkalinawan (Valencia, CA), Jordan Smith (Tustin, CA), and Hannah Jerrier (Canton, MA).  These four combined for 35 points and 22 rebounds.

But the story of the night was Leah Tan (Alhambra, CA) who came off the bench to pour in a career high 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting, which included a 3-of-5 mark from deep.  Jerrier posted a double double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, but also added four assists and three blocks.  Pagkalinawan played 33 minutes and chipped in with 10 points with five boards and five assists and Angelina Roque (Carlsbad, CA) and Downs combined for 16 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

The Bulldogs shot 43.3% from the field, 37.5% from three-point territory, and 70% from the free-throw line.  They held the edge on the glass 39-37, poured in 32 points in the paint and forced 16 Caltech turnovers, turning them into 13 points.

It was a strong start for the Maroon and Grey in the opening 10:00 minutes putting up 23 points on 56% shooting.  They jumped out in front 7-0 with Pagkalinawan converting a triple from the corner, and Jerrier and Roque knocking down jumpers.  CIT fought to get back within two with under five minutes to play but fourteen unanswered by UR opened the game up to double digits.  During the run Julia Balestreri (Pleasanton, CA) converted an and one, Tan knocked down a three-pointer and Smith and Downs added jumpers.

This moved the score to 23-7 and Redlands didn't look back.  Despite only holding a 27-24 advantage through the middle two quarters the Bulldogs were able to outscore the Beavers 15-12 across the final period to pull off the lopsided victory.

Redlands has the weekend off from competition due to their bye.  They now set their sights onto the SCIAC Post Season Tournament next Tuesday, February 22 at 7:00pm with the team TBD.
