WBB SCIAC Preview | University of Redlands vs Caltech (Senior Night)

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Basketball team clinched the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Regular Season Title on Saturday with an 85-62 road win at Cal Lutheran (CLU). With the regular season conference title the Bulldogs have secured the top seed in the upcoming SCIAC Postseason Tournament, meaning they will have the opportunity to host throughout the three-round event.  

Wednesday night's game is Senior Night with the Bulldogs honoring four seniors: Chyanne Pagkalinawan, Alyssa Downs, Hannah Jerrier, and Jordan Smith.  They will host Caltech who they beat in their first meeting, 81-71.

University of Redlands Coming into the Game

As previously mentioned, the Bulldogs are coming off a win that clinched them the SCIAC Regular Season Championship, making it back to back seasons the Bulldogs have won the regular season title.  Overall, the Bulldogs are riding a four-game winning streak, and have won six of their last seven with four of those wins on the road. In the CLU game the Bulldogs were carried by their starters who had 74 of their 85 points.

Angelina Roque just missed her third straight 20-point game with 18 points and seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Jerrier had a game-high 25 points and added 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. Downs had 20 points, four rebounds, and four assists.

Caltech Coming into the Game

The Beavers are currently in sixth place in SCIAC. With the expanded postseason they would make it in as one of the eight teams who would qualify.  They can improve their positioning with two games left on their schedule and being two games back of fifth place Claremont-Mudd-Scripps who they beat in both of their meetings. They are also only one game ahead of seventh and eighth place and two games ahead of last place.  

In Caltech's last game they fell 56-53 at home to Pomona-Pitzer. They only made one three, but were plus 14 in the paint, made three more field goals, outrebounded the Sagehens by five, had two fewer turnovers, but were minus 13 from three and the free throw line.

By the Numbers

University of Redlands – The Bulldogs are the second highest scoring team in the SCIAC at 72.2 points per game (PPG). The Bulldogs are first in shooting percentage (44.6 percent), first in three-point percentage (32.1 percent), and tied for third in free throw percentage (71.1 percent). The Bulldogs are the second leading rebounding team (38.7) and third in assists per game (APG) with 14.2.

On the defensive side the Bulldogs hold opponents to the fourth lowest scoring total at 63.1 PPG, second in field goal percentage defense (37.3 percent), first in rebounding margin (plus 6.4), and second in blocks (3.7 BPG).  

Caltech – The Beavers are the sixth highest scoring team (62.2 PPG), second in field goal percentage (39.5 percent), and eighth in three-point percentage (26.3 percent).

They are one of the better defensive teams, holding opponents to the third fewest points (61.8 PPG), third lowest opponent field goal percentage (37.4 percent), fourth lowest opponent three-point percentage (30.4 percent), first in steals (10.8 SPG), and first in blocks (3.7 BPG).
