Bulldog Swim & Dive sweeps Whittier and battles Cal Lutheran in final SCIAC Tri-Meet

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Swimming & Diving teams wrapped up their 2022-23 regular season schedule Saturday with a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tri-Meet against Whittier College and California Lutheran University.

Both teams split on the day beating Whittier College (M: 152.50-99.50 | W: 170-103) and falling to California Lutheran University (M: 131-130 | W: 215-75).

Men

The men had a huge day totaling 15 podium finishes, which included four wins coming from Tom Jansen (Pleasant Hill, CA) in the 1000 Free (9:51.50), Lucas Walker (Mountain View, CA) in the 100 Back (52.15) and 200 Breast (2:07.34), and the 800 Free Relay (7:06.28), which consisted of Jansen, Memphis Gile, Drew Heaston (Corona, CA), and Blake Eddow (Corona, CA).

Redlands kicked off their day in the 200 Medley Relay going 2nd-3rd with the teams of Walker, Ethan Chir (Las Vegas, NV), Heaston, and Eddow (1:37.45) and Gile, Cole Goyette (Rancho Cucamonga, CA), Jack Forsythe (Ladera Ranch, CA), and Thomas Long (1:39.31).       

Joining Jansen in the 1000 Free was Ron Gvishi (Albany, CA) who took home 4th with a time of 10:37.18.  Eddow returned in the 200 Free to take 2nd with a time of 1:43.99 and was followed by T. Long in 4th with a time of 1:49.36.

Walker took home the title in the 100 Back and was followed by Emerson Kropp (Denver, CO) who took 4th with a time of 58.14.  Wingard had a strong finish in the 100 Breast taking 2nd (1:00.83), while Chir and Goyette followed in 4th (1:01.08) and 5th (1:01.77), respectively.        

Gile swam a 2:04.27 in the 200 Fly to take 2nd, touching in front of Jay Deng (Tacoma, WA) who finished 4th (2:07.85).  The 50 Free saw a trio of great performances led by Heaston who took 3rd with a 22.03.  Forsythe was 5th (22.11) and Dan Bajda (Lombard, Ill.) 6th (22.51).     

The Bulldogs went 3-4-5 in the 100 Free as T. Long led the trio with a time of 48.57, while Eddow and Forsythe followed with times of 48.89 and 49.19, respectively.  Chir had a quick race in the 200 Back with a time of 1:59.93, which put him 2nd and Jansen would follow seven seconds behind in 4th with a time of 2:06.35.  In the distance event, the 500 Free Wingard and Heaston were over a second a part in the finish going 4:52.88 and 4:53.46, respectively.  

Bajda led in the 100 Fly, taking 5th (54.62) and T. Long would come in 3rd in the 200 IM (2:00.32).  The big points on the day came from the 800 Free Relay team, which posted a furious comeback to catch the Kingsmen.  The team of Jansen, Gile, Heaston, and Eddow clocked in at a 7:06.28 and was followed by the Redlands 'B' team of Wingard, Gvishi, Chir, and Walker who touched in 2nd at a mark of 7:14.71.    

Women

A total of 12 podium finishes on the women's side, which saw a pair of victories coming from Sydney Patterson (Hilo, HI) who won the 1-Meter and 3-Meter Dives for the second straight week.  She totaled a 247.05 on the 1-Meter before posting a 230.85 on the 3-Meter. 

Gabrielle Hayon (Agoura Hills, CA), Morgan Felix, Sarah Szafranski (Houston, TX), and Leila Alejos (Portland, OR) got the Maroon and Grey off with a strong 3rd place finish in the 200 Medley Relay clocking in with a time of 1:56.95.  The 'B' team of Lauren Kline (Lone Tree, CO), Fernandez Garica (Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico), Abby Springer (Paso Robles, CA), and Ella Suazo (Littleton, CO) would follow in 4th with a time of 1:58.70.

Emma Jones (Atlanta, GA) led the distance taking 3rd with an 11:41.01 and Andrea Brenstrom (Shrewsbury, MA) followed with a 4th place performance in the 200 Free (2:05.38).  Springer and Hayon returned in the 100 Back going 2nd-3rd with times of 1:03.70 and 1:03.98, in a tight race.  Felix (1:11.80) and Sydney Cordova (Roseville, CA) both had 4th place finishes in the 100 Breast and 200 Fly (2:29.78).  Ashleigh Merrill (Anacortes, WA) and Alejos picked up points in the 50 Free going 3rd (26.29) and 5th (26.66), respectively.  Alejos had a quick turnaround for the 100 Free and that did not stop her as she took 4th with a 57.20, followed by Kline in 5th (59.98).

Jones cruised to a 3rd place finish in the 200 Back with a 2:20.81 and Cordova was six seconds behind in 5th with a 2:26.47.  Felix was 4th in the 200 Breast (2:37.83), Springer took 3rd in the 100 Fly (1:01.61), Hayon and Walos took 3rd (5:28.36) and 5th (5:47.01) in the 500 Free and Kline and Szafranski would end the individual events with a 3rd-4th finish in the 200 IM posting times of 2:22.48 and 2:23.51).                        

The last event on the day was the 800 Free Relay and the top team to finish was Springer, Brenstrom, Suazo, and Hayon who finished 3rd with a time of 8:25.77. 

Up next for the Maroon and Grey are the SCIAC Championships taking place February 15-18 at East Los Angeles College (ELAC).
