Redlands Swim and Dive combine for ten event wins at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Swimming & Diving teams took to the pool over the weekend in a tri-meet with Chapman University and College of Idaho.  Both teams beat The Yotes (M: 178-72 | W: 214-39) but were unable to pick up the sweep falling to the Panthers in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play (M: 154-140 | W: 216-83).

Men

The Maroon and Grey posted seven event victories in head-to-head competition with the Panthers. They swept the 1650 Free, 200 Free, 200 Breast, and 500 Free. Redlands had a chance to win the dual but took second and fourth in the 200 Free Relay eventually falling by 14 points to CU.

In the 1650 Free, Tom Jansen (Pleasant Hill, CA) took home nine points with a 16:23.61, more than :27 seconds better than second place.  The 1650 Free was swept by the U of R with Davis Wingard (Springfield, OR) and Andrew Barillas (Eastvale, CA) taking second and third.

In another event sweep, Blake Eddow (Corona, CA) won the 200 Free with a time of 1:44.42 and he was followed by Drew Heaston (Corona, CA) and Memphis Gile (Highland, CA) who tied for second at 1:47.09.  Eddow led a Bulldog sweep in the 500 Free, swimming a 4:50.63.

Lucas Walker (Mountain View, CA) got nine points for Redlands with his win in the 100 Breast where he out-touched Chapman's runner-up by 0.66 of a second. Walker joined Eddow as the only Bulldogs with multiple event wins as he also took the top spot in the 200 Back, winning with a time of 1:58.95, and being the only Bulldog that finished in the top four spots.

Heaston added to his top-three finish with a win in the 200 Fly, posting a time of 2:00.07. His win came by 0.26 of a second and was the only Bulldog in the top-three.

The final Bulldog to get full points in an event was Ethan Chir (Las Vegas, NV), as he won the 200 Breast in what was a Redlands sweep with Thomas Long (Brea, CA) and Cole Goyette (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) coming in right behind him.

Women

On the women's side the Bulldogs picked up three wins against the Panthers and they saw the diving debut on the 3-Meter from Violet Schultz (Aurora, CO).

Gabrielle Hayon (Agoura Hills, CA) led another Bulldog sweep in the 1650 Free as she posted a margin-of-victory of :33.32 seconds with a new personal best time of 18:27.55. Andrea Brenstrom (Shrewsbury, MA) and Emma Jones (Atlanta, GA), who swam a season best time of 19:02.02, took the next two spots.

In the 1-Meter Sydney Patterson (Hilo, HI) won and posted a score of 254.90, just missing out on a qualifying score for the NCAA Division III West Regionals. Patterson would also take the win in the 3-Meter with a winning score of 262.95, 32.2 points better than second place. Like her 1-Meter score, she just missed out on qualifying for regionals, though, she has one more regular season meet and the SCIAC Championships to qualify.

The Bulldogs will have a quick turnaround with a trip to Whittier College for a tri-meet against the Poets and California Lutheran University on Saturday, February 4 beginning at 10:30 a.m. This will be the first time competing on back-to-back weekends since November when they competed three-straight weekends.
