Women's 200 Medley Relay Team Highlights Opening Day at SCIAC Championships

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Swimming teams took to the pool Wednesday evening to open the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships at Splash (La Mirada Regional Aquatic Center).

Only two events occurred on Day 1, including the 200 Medley Relay and the 800 Free Relay.  The men got off to a strong start totaling 80 points, which puts them in 5th Place, in front of Occidental College (78 Points), Whittier College (7th – 60 Points), Chapman University (58 Points), and La Verne (9th - 54 Points).  The women collected 96 points and are currently in 6th Place beating Cal Lutheran (7th – 68 Points), Whittier College (8th – 64 Points), and La Verne (9th – 54 Points). 

Men

In the 200 Medley Relay the Bulldog 'A' team of Memphis Gile (Redlands, CA), Lucas Walker (Mountain View, CA), Drew Heaston (Corona, CA), and Jack Forsythe (Ladera Ranch, CA) got the scoring started finishing 7th with a 1:34.95, which put up a quick 28 points on the scoreboard.  The 'B' team of Tom Jansen (Pleasant Hill, CA), Davis Wingard (Springfield, OR), Chris Loudon (Anchorage, AK), and Dan Bajda (Lombard, Ill.) would add another eight points after finishing 15th with a time of 1:38.88.

The 800 Free Relay was electric to end the evening with the U of R 'A' team consisting of Gile, Walker, Jansen, and Blake Eddow (Corona, CA) taking 5th with a 6:55.48, which was four seconds faster than their seed time (6:59.17).  They put up another 32 points.  The 'B" team of Thomas Long (Brea, CA), Loudon, Ron Gvishi (Albany, CA), and Heaston would support the total as well taking 13th with a 6:58.84 adding another 12 points.          

Women

The 200 Medley Relay, one of the top events for the Bulldogs pulled out a podium finish with the 'A' team of Sydney Nakagawa (Vancouver, WA), Hannah Parker (Seattle, WA), Madison Petschauer (Cary, NC), and Makenna Parenti (Rocklin, CA) touching in at a 1:46.84 that brought in 36 points and a 3rd place finish.  The 'B' team came in 13th with a 1:51.89 adding another 12 points, beating their seed time by four seconds.  This team consisted of Abby Springer (Paso Robles, CA), Madison Southmayd (Anthem, AZ), Sarah Szafranski (Houston, TX), and Emily Heaston (Corona, CA).

Redlands was in a great spot to add big points in the 800 Free Relay but the 'A' team of Petschauer, Gaby Hayon (Agoura Hills, CA), Andrea Brenstrom (Shrewsbury, MA), and Jacqueline Setlich (Laguna Niguel, CA) would get DQ'd forcing only the 'B' team to bring in points.  That second team of Springer, Anna O'Meara (Clovis, CA), Szafranski, and Heaston would come in 13th with an 8:15.40 totaling an additional 12 points.    

Redlands returns to the pool tomorrow, February 17 for Day 2 action of the SCIAC Championships.  Events will include the 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free, 200 Free Relay and Time Trials.  Prelims begin at 9:00am and the Finals at 5:00pm.
