U of R Swim & Dive pick up twelve victories in tri-meet against Caltech and Occidental

PASADENA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Swimming & Diving teams had an impressive weekend going up against Caltech and Occidental College in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) tri-meet.

The women had a strong showing leading the Maroon and Grey going 2-0 on the morning beating CIT (181-112) and OXY (186-110), while compiling 10 victories.  The men on the other side posted a 1-1 finish beating OXY (144.50-104.50) before falling to CIT (194-66), but they totaled two wins on the day.   

Women

Sydney Patterson (Hilo, HI) again put together a pair of strong performances on the boards.  She won both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter dives, while posting her second regional qualifying score, which punched her ticket to the NCAA Division III West Regionals (Trinity, TX).  She beat out a field of six competitors in the 1-Meter with a score of 269.90 and then came back with a 233.80 in the 3-Meter. 

The third victory on the day came in the 200 Medley Relay with the team of Sydney Nakagawa (Vancouver, WA), Hanna Parker (Seattle, WA), Madison Petschauer (Cary, NC), and Jacqueline Setlich (Laguna Niguel, CA) touching with a time of 1:51.29.  In the distance Andrea Brenstrom (Shrewsbury, MA) took home the fourth victory winning the 1000 Free with a time of 11:16.29 right in front of Emma Jones (Atlanta, GA) who took 3rd (11:41.77).

Setlich and Gaby Hayon (Agoura Hills, CA) went 2-3 in the 200 Free with times of 2:04.92 and 2:05.33.  Nakagawa then returned in her first individual event taking 3rd in the 100 Back with a time of 1:01.43.  Petschauer then got into the mix winning the 100 Breast with a time of 1:07.42 as she led a trio of Bulldogs who went 1-2-3.  She edged out Parker (2nd – 1:08.31) and Madison Southmayd (Anthem, AZ) (3rd – 1:08.92).    

Sarah Szafranski (Houston, TX) earned a podium finish in the 200 Fly finishing 3rd with a 2:16.81 beating out Makenna Parenti (Rocklin, CA) who took 4th with a 2:16.89.  Nakagawa took home top marks in the 50 Free with a time of 25.06, beating her seed time coming in (25.22).  She also came out on top in the 200 Back with a time of 2:13.01.  Setlich returned in the 100 Free taking 4th (56.67) before Southmayd took home the top time in the 200 Breast with a 2:31.80 beating Parker (2nd – 2:36.21) and Morgan Felix (Burnt Hills, NY) (3rd – 2:37.00). 

Brenstrom, Hayon, and Abby Springer (Paso Robles, CA) went 1-2-3 in the 500 Free with times of 5:26.01, 5:29.06, and 5:45.50, respectively.  Petschauer then got back into the mix winning her third event on the day taking home top marks in the 100 Fly with a time of 57.65 right in front of a 2nd place finish in the 200 IM (2:13.31). 

The final event on the day was the 200 Free Relay where Parenti, Emily Heaston (Corona, CA), Courtney Prefontaine (San Clemente, CA), and Southmayd took 3rd with a 1:44.71 beating out the 'B' team of Hayon, Springer, Anna O'Meara (Clovis, CA), and Szafranski (4th - 1:46.59). 

Other notable performances included Lauren Kline (Parker, CO) and Springer touching the wall at the exact same time in the 100 Back to take 5th together with a time of 1:04.46, Felix taking 5th in the 100 Breast with a 1:12.15, Setlich in the 50 Free going 5th with a 26.17, Kline and Sydney Britton going 5-6 in the 200 Back with times o 2:18.11 and 2:21.19, respectively, Parenti finishing 5th in the 100 Fly (1:02.37), and Kline taking 4th in the 200 IM (2:20.97).                                         

Men 

The two victories on the day for the Maroon and Grey came from Lucas Walker (Mountain View, CA) who won the 100 Back (53.35) and 200 Back (1:59.40).       

But there were also a number of other strong performances on the men's side first from the 200 Medley Relay 'A' team consisting of Memphis Gile (Redlands, CA), Walker, Drew Heaston (Corona, CA), and Jack Forsythe (Ladera Ranch, CA) who took 3rd with a 1:38.51.  Tom Jansen (Pleasant Hill, CA) had a great race in the 500 Free finishing 2nd with a 10:03.04 followed by Emerson Kropp (Denver, CO) and Andrew Barillas (Eastvale, CA) who went 5-6 with times of 11:57.47 and 11:58.03.

Ron Gvishi (Albany, CA) and Chris Loudon (Anchorage, AK) combined to finish 6th (1:50.67) and 7th (1:50.69) in the 200 Free.  Thomas Long (Brea, CA) and Davis Wingard (Springfield, OR) then followed in the 100 Breast going 4-5 with times of 1:01.73 and 1:02.23.  Heaston was the lone Bulldog in the 200 Fly taking 4th (2:00.90).

Gile returned in the 50 Free to finish 4th with a time of 22.15, beating his seed time (22.23), while Forsythe finished 6th with a 22.39.  Gile and Forsythe also competed in the 100 Free together taking 3rd and 7th, respectively with times of 48.45 and 49.41.  Wingard and T. Long competed together in the 200 Breast taking 4th (2:16.07) and 5th (2:16.27).  Jansen put together another 2nd place mark, this time in the 500 Free with a time of 4:54.47, while Loudon and Zack Gissel (Beaumont, CA) went 6th-7th.

Heaston led the UR in the 100 Fly taking 4th (53.19) and then joined the 200 Free Relay team of Forsythe, Dan Bajda (Lombard, IL), and T. Long for a 2nd place finish with a time of 1:28.02.  The 'B' team in the same event consisting of Darquez Morrison (Springfield, MO), Gvishi, Andrew Sorensen (Long Beach, CA), and Andres Martinez (Beaumont, CA) took 7th with a 1:32.52.                              

Redlands returns home to the Thompson Aquatic Center next Saturday, January 29 when they host Chapman University in a head-to-head dual meet.  Diving will start at 10:30am and swimming at 11:00am.
