Bulldog Swim & Dive returns to the pool against Nationally Ranked Claremont-M-S

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Swimming & Diving teams returned to the pool Saturday morning after six weeks away from competition.

In their first meet back they squared off against Nationally Ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the road in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play. 

Despite not gathering any victories on the day the Bulldogs did come away with some great finishes, quality experience and are excited to be back competing once again.

Women

Sydney Patterson (Hilo, HI) got the scoring started for the Maroon and Grey finishing 2nd overall in the 1-Meter Dive posting a 232.55, only seven points off of first.  Makenna Parenti (Rocklin, CA) who competed for the first time on the board took 7th with a 142.10.  Patterson then returned in the 3-Meter to take 4th overall with a mark of 211.10.  

In the 400 Medley Relay, the 'A' team of Sydney Nakagawa (Vancouver, WA), Madison Southmayd (Anthem, AZ), Parenti, and Madison Petschauer (Cary, NC) took 3rd overall with a time of 4:07.76.  The 'B' team wasn't far behind in 5th as Abby Springer (Paso Robles, CA), Hanna Parker (Seattle, WA), Sarah Szafranski (Houston, TX), and Jacqueline Setlich (Laguna Niguel, CA) would come in with a 4:11.17.

Nakagawa and Andrea Brenstrom (Shrewsbury, MA) combined to go 5-6 in the 200 Free with times of 2:04.64 and 2:06.48, respectively.  Anna O'Meara (Clovis, CA) (2:09.96), Southmayd (2:10.59), and Lauren Kline (Parker, CO) (2:12.44) then went 8-9-10.  After a 4th place finish by Parenti in the 50 Free (25.99), four other Bulldogs would come in after to touch going 6-9, which included Szafranski (26.84), Courtney Prefontaine (San Clemente, CA) (27.26), Mary Tanouye (Kiel, WI) (27.43), and Parker (27.88).  Morgan Felix (Burnt Hills, NY) led the five Bulldogs competing in the 400 IM finishing 5th with a 5:05.92.  She was followed by Emily Heaston (Corona, CA) (5:10.12), Sydney Britton (Tacoma, WA) (5:11.94), Sydney Cordova (Roseville, CA) (5:16.01), and Sarah Martin (Tualatin, OR) (5:20.05).

Springer and Kayla Smith (Redlands, CA) both competed in the 200 Fly going 5-6 with times of 2:25.61 and 2:41.95.  Petschauer had a big race in the 100 Free taking 2nd overall with a 55.47.  Szafranski would take 4th (59.11) and was followed by O'Meara (59.15), Chessie Briggs (Tacoma, WA) (1:00.54), and Tanouye (1:02.10).  Kline had a nice race in the 200 Back finishing 4th with a 2:18.10, while Emma Jones (Atlanta, GA) (2:19.91), Prefontaine (2:24.17), Leila Alejos (Portland, OR) (2:29.78), and Erin McGrellis (Wilmington, DE) (2:32.67) went 6-9.

Gaby Hayon (Agoura Hills, CA) led the distance taking 3rd in the 500 Free with a time of 5:28.24.  Brenstrom took 5th (5:36.43), Setlich 6th (5:36.51), Abby Dimicco (Las Vegas, NV) 8th (6:07.54), and Kendall Stigall (Berwyn, PA) 9th (6:46.62).

Petschauer returned in one of her top events the 200 Breast to take 3rd (2:32.03).  Parker joined her in 7th with a 2:33.90.  In the final event of the day, the 400 Free Relay, the 'A' team of Nakagawa, Hayon, Setlich, and O'Meara put together a 4th place finish coming in at a 3:50.45.  The 'B' team was right on their heels coming in 5th with a 3:56.89, consisting of Alejos, Kline, Heaston, and Springer.                           

Men

The 400 Medley Relay was the first event for the Bulldogs with the 'A' team clocking in at 3:41.84, which was good enough for 4th.  This team included Memphis Gile (Redlands, CA), Thomas Long (Brea, CA), Drew Heaston (Corona, CA), and Ron Gvishi (Albany, CA).  The 'B' team was two spots behind in 6th with a time of 4:12.10 and that team consisted of Darquez Morrison (Springfield, MO), Scott Shim (Seoul, South Korea), Garrett Long (Brea, CA), and Andrew Barillas (Eastvale, CA).

Eight Bulldogs competed in the 200 Free led by Gile who took 5th overall with a 1:48.29.  He was followed by Heaston in 7th (1:49.69), Chris Loudon (Anchorage, AK) in 9th (1:52.24), Tom Jansen (Pleasant Hill, CA) in 11th (1:52.66), and Andrew Sorensen (Long Beach, CA) in 15th (1:55.54).  After a 3rd place finish in the 50 Free by T. Long (22.44), Jack Forsythe (Ladera Ranch, CA) (22.73), Gvishi (23.47), and Morrison (23.72) followed in 5th, 6th. 7thDavis Wingard (Springfield, OR) was the lone Bulldog to compete in the 400 IM taking 3rd with a 4:26.00.  He also took 4th in the 500 Free with a time of 5:00.21, which finished ahead of Jansen (6th – 5:04.71), Heaston (5:05.65), and G. Long (5:20.54).  

Gile returned in the 100 Free to post a 2nd place finish (49.19) leading Gvishi (6th – 50.55), Loudon (7th – 52.88), Owen Nishimura (Carlsbad, CA) (8th – 57.51), and Jack Ryan (Ventura, CA) (9th – 59.90).  Barillas then competed in the 200 Breast finishing 4th overall with a 2:38.88.  

Then to wrap up the day, three teams competed in the 400 Free Relay led by the 'A' team of T. Long, Jansen, Forsythe, and Morrison who took 4th with a time of 3:22.02.  The 'B' team of Emerson Kropp (Denver, CO), Zack Gissel (Beaumont, CA), Sorenson and Loudon took 5th (3:30.81), and the 'C' squad of Wingard, Ryan, G. Long, and Shim would finish 6th with a 3:38.43.

Redlands remains in SCIAC competition next Saturday, January 22 when they travel to take on Caltech and Occidental in a tri-meet beginning at 10:30am.
