U of R Swim & Dive opens 2021-22 with Bulldog Pentathlon

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Swimming & Diving team opened up their 2021-22 campaign over the weekend hosting their annual Bulldog Pentathlon.

The event features 100 yards of each stroke for a collective time to determine the men's and women's winners.

Highlighting the day on the women's side was sophomore Madison Petschauer (Cary, N.C.) who finished first overall in the field of 77 swimmers, and secured a combined time of 5:02.96. She won three of her five events at the meet including the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.42, the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:01.64, and the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.53. She also earned second place in the 100-yard freestyle (55.48) and the 100-yard individual medley (1:00.89).

On the men's side junior Lucas Walker (Mountain View, CA) shined leading the field of 66 swimmers. He clocked a total time of 4:25.23 to finish first overall, winning four of the five events. He registered a time of 51.85 in the 100-yard butterfly, notched a time of 53.69 in the 100-yard backstroke, clocked a time of 57.95 in the 100-yard breaststroke, and won the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 52.54. He also posted a time of 49.20 in the 100-yard freestyle. 

Pushing Walker was junior Blake Eddow (Corona, CA), the 2019 Bulldog Pentathlon champion.  He clocked in with a 4:35.69, winning the 100 Freestyle with a 48.16.  He then took 3rd in the 100 Fly (52.88), 5th in the 100 Back (55.60), 2nd in the 100 IM (54.57), and 17th in the 100 Breast (1:04.45).

Other solid finishes on the women's side included senior Sydney Nakagawa (Vancouver, WA) who finished 7th Overall with a combined time of 5:24.91.  Her top event was the 100 Back where she took 1st with a time of 1:01.37.  She also finished 7th in the 100 Free (56.48) and 6th in the 100 IM (1:03.88).  Senior Madison Southmayd (Anthem, AZ) was right behind in 8th (5:25.42).  Her top finish was in the 100 Back where she finished 2nd (1:07.78) and she followed that up with an 8th place finish in the 100 Free (56.74).  Wrapping up the 7-8-9 finish was junior Gaby Hayon (Agoura Hills, CA) who combined for a 5:27.14.  Her top finish was in the 100 Back where she posted a time of 1:04.27, which placed her 10th.  She also added a 15th place performance in the 100 Free (58.04). 

Wrapping up the Top 20 for the women included Lauren Kline (Parker, CO) (13th – 5:31.05), Sarah Szafranski (Houston, TX) (17th – 5:34.37), Ashleigh Merrill (Anacortes, WA) (19th – 5:35.55), and Morgan Felix (Burnt Hills, NY) (20th – 5:35.66).

For the men, finishing in 7th was first year Memphis Gile (Redlands, CA) who combined for a 4:41.82.  His best finish was in the 100 Free where he went 49.06 for 5th.  He also added a strong performance in the 100 Back with a time of 56.77 (8th) and the 100 Breast with a time of 1:04.45 (15th).  Sophomore Drew Heaston (Corona, CA) had a great day as well posting a 10th place finish in the 100 Fly (54.56), 15th in the 100 Free (50.10), and 20th in the 100 Breast (1:05.44).  First year Thomas Long (Brea, CA) opened his college career with some great times going 1:02.93 in the 100 Breast, that place him 8th.  He then went 49.50 in the 100 Free, which was good enough for 9th, and added a 59.56 in the 100 Back for 21st

The final top 20 finisher was junior Chris Loudon (Anchorage, AK) who took 19th with a combined time of 4:52.40.   

Redlands returns to the pool Saturday, November 6 at 10:30am when they host a tri-meet with the University of La Verne and Biola University.
