Chansler and Depew Highlight Redlands’ Success at Saturday’s Bulldog Pentathlon

Sophomore Chris Depew (Naperville, IL) led the Bulldog men by taking second place overall and sophomore Jessie Chansler (Kirkland, WA) finished sixth overall on the women's side as the University of Redlands swimming teams came through with strong performances at the Bulldog Pentathlon on Saturday morning at the Thompson Aquatic Center.

The meet exhibited a 100-yard race of each stroke followed by a 100 individual medley as the finale of the pentathlon. The sum of each individual's times determined the overall finishes for the swimmers, while no team scoring took place.

For the men, Depew placed second overall with a combined time of 4:37.62. He uncorked a blistering 52.99 in the Fly to go along with sub-minute performances in the Back (56.41), Free (49.43) and IM (55.07).

Beyond Depew, junior Tyler Harp (San Bernardino, CA) provided a solid meet by finishing third overall with a time of 4:42.46. Junior Collin Gladys (Yorba Linda, CA) came in ninth at 4:48.16, while senior Alec Alders (Pasadena, CA) recorded a time of 4:55.84 in 16th place. Rookie David Ortyn (Bainbridge Island, WA) rounded out the top five for Redlands with a performance of 4:56.36 for 18th.

Depew just missed the first-place mark of 4:35.67 set by Max Scholten of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. Depew won the event last season, but posted a faster overall time by 0.03 seconds in his sophomore campaign.

Leading the Bulldog women, Chansler posted a total time of 5:23.17, highlighted by a sub-minute showing in of 57.11 in the Freestyle race.

In addition, junior McKenzie Nakamura (Kenmore, WA), senior Kat McIntosh (Baltimore, MD) and sophomores Kendall Irish (College Park, MD), Missy Utama (Walnut, CA) and Jessica Medvec (Tualatin, OR) all finished in the top 15 of the meet, recording results of 5:31 or less.

Michele Kee of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges registered the fastest cumulative time for the women as she finished the five events in 5:10.69.

Redlands looks forward to hosting the 2010 Bulldog Dive Invite on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Thompson Aquatic Center.
