The University of Redlands women’s and men’s
swimming & diving teams won for the second time in as many
days, defeating Occidental College by respective scores of 178-54
and 176-46 on Saturday afternoon in Redlands.
Freshman Lauren Zehner (Portland, OR) and freshman Lauren Craig
(Newcastle, CA) each gained two individual event wins for the
Bulldogs. Zehner clocked first-place standards in the 50 freestyle
(25.79) and the 200 butterfly (2:12.00) while Craig edged the field
in the 200 backstroke (2:19.42) before offering up the fastest time
in the 200 breaststroke (2:35.63).
In the 1650 freestyle, sophomore Joy Corona (Lake Bluff, IL) used
her endurance to produce a winning time of 19:45.11.
Freshman Allie Bollella (Palo Alto, CA) started strong and never
faded in the 200 freestyle, notching the event’s top mark
(2:01.61).
Using her versatile stroke talents, freshman Missy Utama (Walnut,
CA) checked in at 2:22.34 for first in the 200 individual
medley.
Freshman Shirin Sedaghat (Boulder, CO) continued to make a name for
herself among the top sprinters on the team as she won by nearly
two seconds in the 100 freestyle (56.19).
Finally, freshman Jessie Chansler (Kirkland, WA) rounded out the
Bulldog women who finished first with a 5:38.94 500 freestyle.
Redlands swept both relay events as well. Freshman Jessica Medvec
(Tualatin, OR), sophomore McKenzie Nakamura (Kenmore, WA), Craig
and Bollella boasted the top 400 medley relay standard (4:16.91)
while Chansler, Zehner, sophomore Jaime Nippert (Gresham, OR) and
sophomore Casey Sripramong (Glendale, CA) registered a first-place
time of 3:49.40 in the 400 freestyle relay.
Other standout performances came from freshman Lauren Campbell
(Dana Point, CA) in the 1650 freestyle (20:16.49), Nippert in the
200 freestyle (2:05.45), Sripramong in the 50 freestyle (26.16),
senior Kelly Goeres (Tigard, OR) in the 200 individual medley
(2:23.87), Utama in the 200 butterfly (2:18.06), Medvec in the 200
backstroke (2:19.69), sophomore Jamie Paul (Boring, OR) in the 500
freestyle (5:41.12) and sophomore Jenny Bates (Littleton, CO) in
the 200 breaststroke (2:38.68).
Senior Matt Adams (Vista, CA) and sophomore Tyler Harp (San
Bernardino, CA) led the men in their decisive triumph over the
Tigers.
Adams captured the top mark in both diving events, earning
first-place points in the 3-meter (187.45) and the 1-meter
(177.60).
Harp muscled through the 50 freestyle in 21.71 before nearly
negative splitting his 100 freestyle in a first-place 48.01.
Junior Alec Alders (Los Angeles, CA) won by more than a minute in
the 1650 freestyle, turning in a time of 17:17.02.
In the 200 freestyle, senior Ryan Floersch (San Jose, CA) pulled
away from the field with each passing 50, eventually winning the
event with a time of 1:47.88.
Sophomore Will Houser (Woodinville, WA) battled his teammate,
senior Ned Voytovich (Salt Lake City, UT), in the 200 individual
medley and ultimately used a 37-second breaststroke split to win in
2:11.45.
Freshman Chris Depew (Naperville, IL) set the gold standard in the
200 butterfly, cruising to a 2:03.23 victory.
Against talented competition in the 200 backstroke, senior Ian
Starkie (Arroyo Grande, CA) topped the field with a mark of
2:05.44.
Senior Carlos Saldivar (San Jose, CA) earned the squad’s
final individual event triumph of the meet, pacing the 500
freestyle competition with a 5:18.15.
Both relays went to the Maroon and Gray as the 400 medley relay
contingent of Alders, senior Scott Tsukamoto (Dana Point, CA),
Depew and sophomore Steven Zarian (Superior, CO) produced a
first-place time of 3:46.39 while the 400 freestyle relay team of
Harp, senior John Floersch (San Jose, CA), R. Floersch and Alders
combined for a mark of 3:16.96.
Second-place finishes for the Bulldog men came from sophomore Mike
Camp (Palos Verdes Estates, CA) in the 1650 freestyle (18:28.98),
Depew in the 200 freestyle (1:49.41), J. Floersch in the 50
freestyle (22.37), Voytovich in the 200 individual medley (2:12.00)
and the 200 backstroke (2:09.28), Camp in the 200 butterfly
(2:09.56), freshman Matt Zaggy (University City, MO) in the 100
freestyle (49.30) and Tsukamoto in the 200 breaststroke
(2:21.32).
Redlands (2-1, 2-0 SCIAC; 2-1, 2-0 SCIAC) will travel a handful of
individuals to Long Beach next weekend for the Finis Collegiate
Invitational. The meet takes place from Friday, Dec. 11, through
Sunday, Dec. 13, and will follow a prelim-final format.
