Redlands Softball SCIAC Postseason Tournament Preview

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Softball team finished in a three-way tie for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) regular season title with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) and Chapman University (CU) at 14-7. Following the tiebreakers, the Bulldogs picked up the No. 3 seed while CMS received the No. 1 seed and tournament host responsibilities.  Chapman comes in as the No. 2 seed and Pomona-Pitzer (P-P) the No. 4 seed. UR opens the tournament with No. 2 Chapman University beginning at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, May 12.

Head-to-Head Results

The Bulldogs went 2-1 against the top-seeded Athenas with a 6-2 home win (Box score | Recap), a 3-2 road loss in Game 1 of their doubleheader (Box score | Recap), and a 4-1 win in Game 2 (Box score | Recap).

Against No. 2 Chapman they went 1-2. They lost 9-5 in Game 1 on the road (Box score | Recap), lost Game 1 of their home doubleheader (Box score | Recap) and added a walk off 3-2 win in Game 2 of the doubleheader (Box score |Recap).

In their matchups with No. 4 Pomona-Pitzer they were 1-2 with a 6-3 eight-inning road loss in Game 1 (Box score | Recap), a 7-6 win in Game 1 of their home doubleheader (Box score | Recap), and a 4-2 loss in Game 2 of the doubleheader (Box score | Recap).

No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

The Athenas went 6-3 against the rest of the field, which included a 3-0 sweep of Chapman, a 1-2 record against Redlands, and a 2-1 series win over Pomona-Pitzer. They have the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year and six All-SCIAC members.

Offensively the Athenas are led by Emma Suh who was named 2nd Team All-SCIAC and had a slash line of .360/.381/.448 (batting average/on-base percentage/slugging percentage). She also scored 29 runs (3rd in SCIAC) and had 45 hits (3rd). 1st Teamer Abby Thompson drove in 24 runs (2nd) and Kaili Aqui stole 12 bases (6th).

In the circle Heather Shipley threw 71.1 innings (11th), 2nd Teamer Maya Loper had a 1.76 (6th) earned run average (ERA), struck out 47 (9th), and had the highest strikeout per seven innings mark at 7.53.

No. 2 Chapman University

The Panthers went 4-5 against the tournament with a 2-1 mark against Redlands and P-P and got swept by CMS. They have five All-SCIAC members.

Offensively they are led by second team All-SCIAC member Samantha Kennedy who scored 18 runs (16th) and stole 13 bases (4th). First teamer Ilianna Serna hit .346 (11th), had 36 hits (10th), and drove in 20 runs (8th).

In the circle first team member Rose Malen led the Panthers in innings pitched 100.1 (7th), strikeouts (3rd), and ERA 1.40 (2nd).

No. 3 University of Redlands

The Bulldogs went 4-5 against the tournament field. They received five All-SCIAC selections including the Pitcher of the Year in Katlyn Gandara (Whittier, CA).

The Bulldogs offensive leaders are 2nd Teamers shortshop Natalie Horton (Palmdale, CA) who scored 33 runs (2nd) and walked 18 times (3rd), first baseman Alexis Campos (Lake Forest, CA) who had 49 hits (1st) after posting a .422/.469/.664 slash line, utility Kalyn Kershner (Ewa Beach, HI) who drove in 28 runs (1st), and catcher Isabella Culp (Hanford, CA) who hit over .300 (.327) after finishing with a sub .250 average (.247) overall. Her conference average is the 14th highest. She also reached base at a .389 (16th) clip and slugged .408 (14th). Defensively she caught two runners stealing and was a part of two double plays.   

Brooklyn Bard (Garden Grove, CA) is another name to watch who stole 20 bases (2nd) on the season. Bard's 20 steals are the ninth most in single-season program history.

In the circle, 1st Teamer and Pitcher of the Year, Gandara finished with 132.1 innings thrown (2nd), 49 strikeouts (8th), and a 1.75 ERA (5th).

No. 4 Pomona-Pitzer

The Sagehens went 4-5 against the tournament field and were 1-2 against Claremont-M-S, 1-2 against Chapman, and 2-1 against Redlands. They had four All-SCIAC selections including the Athlete of the Year in Devin Waddell and Newcomer of the Year Kylie Liu.

Their leaderboards are covered by 1st Teamers Liu and Waddell as Liu scored 27 runs (4th), recorded 47 hits (2nd), hit seven home runs (1st) and had a slash line of .392/.493/.667. Waddell drove in 21 runs (6th), hit six home runs (3rd), and had a slash line of .349/.418/.571. Addie Wasikonis added nine stolen bases (10th).

In the circle Waddell threw 118.2 innings (4th), had a 1.24 ERA (1st), and struck out 72 batters (5th).

2022 SCIAC Tournament

In 2022 the Bulldogs, who were the SCIAC Regular Season Champions lost 10-0 at home in the opening game to the Sagehens. After Chapman beat La Verne in Game 2 of day one, the Bulldogs stayed alive with an 8-5 win over La Verne to open Day 2 action. Chapman then stayed unbeaten with a 6-4 win over the Sagehens and Redlands eliminated P-P 8-7 to end the second day. On Championship Sunday Chapman finished the tournament undefeated and earned the SCIAC AQ into the NCAA Tournament beating the Bulldogs 5-2.

SCIAC Tournament History

CMS leads the way with 12 appearances, Redlands is third with 10 appearances, Chapman is fifth with six appearances, and P-P is sixth with five appearances.

CMS' all-time record is 26-12, the 26 wins are the most in SCIAC history. They also have a SCIAC-high five championships and four runners-up which are second most.

Chapman's all-time record is 3-10 with all three of those wins coming last season as well as their lone championship; they also have one runner-up finish.

Redlands is 23-14, the second most wins in SCIAC history, with three championships, tied for second most, and six runner-up finishes, most all-time.

P-P is 5-10 all-time, fifth most wins in SCIAC history, and is one of three teams without a championship.  They also have one runner-up finish.

The winner of the Chapman-Redlands game will play the winner of Claremont-M-S-Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, May 13 with game time to be announced. The losers from the opening games will play the first match-up Saturday morning in an elimination contest.
