Men’s water polo drops first two matches of the season

Irvine, Calif. - The Bulldog men's water polo team played a pair of matches at the UC Irvine Mini-Tournament against Concordia (Calif.) and No. 13 UC Irvine, losing both by final scores of 17-11 and 21-2. 

 

Vs. Concordia:

The Bulldogs were within two goals at the half, 9-7, but they were shutout in the third, trailing 15-7 heading to the final period. The Bulldogs did finish strong winning the period 4-2.

The Bulldogs struggled defensively conceding four penalties with the Eagles taking advantage with three conversions to the Bulldogs 0-1 mark.

Drake Moody and Andrew Sorensen each registered three points with Moody finding the back of the net twice with an assist and Sorensen a goal and pair of assists. The Bulldogs used two keepers with Liam Murphy showing well with seven saves and a .438 save percentage. 

 

At No. 13 UC Irvine: 

Life was tough against Concordia, but going against the No. 13 team in Division 1 was even more so, seeing the Bulldogs lose 21-2. 

The Bulldogs conceded the first six goals. They found their opener with 5:52 remaining in the second period thanks to an Owen Nishimura goal. The second and final goal came from Spencer Clinton with 1:53 left in the third.

Liam Murphy showed well again with seven saves while playing half the game. Drake Moody did not find a goal but he did have a team-high three steals. 

As a team the Bulldogs were held to a .071 shooting shot percentage and struggled to a 1-13 mark on the power play. 

 

What's next: The Bulldogs host six games across two days for the Inland Empire Classic on September 11-12. They start their match slate with a matchup against another D1 team in the Air Force Falcons on Saturday September 11 at 9:00 a.m.
