Bulldog Men’s Soccer returns to top form in 2-0 victory over Kingsmen

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team returned to top form Saturday night with a big road win against California Lutheran University, 2-0.

The Maroon and Grey rebounded nicely following their 5-4 loss to Chapman University earlier in the week.  They also get back at the Kingsmen, who came into Farquhar Field on September 25 and pulled off a draw.

Redlands improves to 10-2-1, 6-2-1 SCIAC and still holds a one point lead over Chapman University for 2nd place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Standings.

Both goals on the evening came in the second half for UR.  The first coming in the 64th minute, with Mikey Flota (West Covina, CA) and Joseph Parra (West Covina, CA) combining deep in the right corner.  Flota dropped a pass back to Parra, who hit a first-time cross to the head of Collin ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR).  ChubbFertal had to really snap his neck to generate a lot of power on the ensuing header and he connected going low and hard to the keeper's left, who managed to get his hand on the ball before it made its way into the goal.

Insurance was added in the 77th minute, this time from Arian Mogharei (Hayward, CA).  He intercepted a pass at midfield and passed it off to Nicolas Mancilla (Pasadena, CA) on the right flank.  Mancilla took a skillful touch around the first defender and then beat a second with his pace towards the endline.  He then served in an easy cross on the ground towards Mogharei, who smashed it in top shelf from six yards out.

Another big story line was Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA) in goal, who stopped the equalizer for CLU in the second half.  He made a world-class save on a Cal Lutheran volley from 25-yards out, which was dipping into the back corner of the net.  He then leaped up and clawed it out of the corner as one of four saves on the evening.

The Bulldogs outshot the Kingsmen 16-8 on the night, while corners were tied at 3-3.  Flota, Mogharei, and Ethan Kovach (Las Vegas, CA) each recorded three shots, while ChubbFertal added two.

Redlands returns to the pitch this Wednesday, October 20, when they host Occidental College on Farquhar Field, beginning at 7:00pm.
