Nathan Buchan fans ten as Redlands Baseball edges previously unbeaten Puget Sound 5-3

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Baseball team picked up their third win on the season Sunday holding off previously undefeated University of Puget Sound 5-3 behind a stellar performance from Nathan Buchan (Mercer Island, WA) who went 6.0 Innings strong giving up two runs on six hits, while striking out a career high ten batters.

A pair of singles from Luke De Vries (Irvine, CA) and Jared Anderson (Gilbert, AZ) allowed the Bulldogs to strike first thanks to a sacrifice fly from Max Clark (Fontana, CA)

After the Loggers took a 2-1 lead on a two-run shot in the top-half of the second, the Bulldogs were quick to respond taking the lead for good with a pair of runs of their own in their ensuing at-bats. Will Cell (Seattle, WA) brought around Sean McCance (Irvine, CA) to tie the game at two and De Vries drove home Cell with a single to right field for the 3-2 lead.

In the following inning Kaiya Saito (Bellevue, WA) made it 4-2 with a single through the left side as Sebastian Mejorado (Oceanside, CA) was able to come around and score the eventual game-winning run.

The final tally of the game for Redlands came in the fifth when Mejorado hit his first career home run, a solo shot to deep left center as he put the Bulldogs up 5-2.

After throwing six innings, Buchan was replaced by Nate Helton (Menifee, CA) who struck out three in 1.1 innings in the seventh and eighth. Jakob Russell (Fontana, CA) then came in and got the five-out save with two strikeouts.

De Vries and Jared Anderson (Gilbert, AZ) each had two hits while Mejorado reached base three times with a hit and two walks. Each team finished with nine hits, but the 15 strikeouts from the Bulldogs' pitching staff was the difference as they kept the Loggers from putting the ball in play.

The Bulldogs will stay at home this Friday, February 17 when they host Whitworth University for a single game beginning at 2:00pm.
