The time has come for your child to enter college.  It’s scary, exciting, and fun. Here are a few things to know about becoming a student-athlete at Redlands:

Paying for school:  One of the cornerstones of the NCAA DIII experience is that all financial aid must be need- and academic-based.   More than 90% of University of Redlands students receive financial aid assistance through your student’s academic profile, scholarship, grants, loans, and work-study awards. We encourage all students to submit the FAFSA to apply for financial aid after January 1 but before the deadline of March 2.  Redlands will work to make this educational opportunity affordable for your family based on many variables.

It is realistic for your child to succeed academically and athletically while utilizing his/her work-study award?  The answer is yes, although many student-athletes chose to work only when they are not in season.  Jobs are available both on and off-campus and are limited to 8-10 hours per week during the academic year.  Qualified students should attend a Student Employment workshop at the start of the fall semester and go through the hiring process even if they don’t plan to work until later in the academic year.

We take the concept of student-athlete very seriously.  Your child's academic success is our top priority.  It is important for you to know that the 500 or so student-athletes on our campus, competing in 21 programs perform at a higher academic rate than the non-student-athletes, they retain at a higher rate than the non-student-athlete and they graduate in four years at a higher rate than the non-student-athlete.  Historically, we recognize about 20-25% of our student-athletes each year as Redlands Scholar-Athletes, which means that they have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and lettered in at least one sport.  Tutoring, time management, writing skills, academic planning, and more are available for all students.

In addition to the coaching staff and the services previously noted, our Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) are here to assist your student-athletes throughout their academic journey.  FARs serve as confidential resources to student-athletes for information, support, and counseling regarding any issues or concerns they have about academic life at the University.  FARs encourage student-athletes to communicate early and often with faculty regarding the interplay of academic and athletic schedules.  When academic-athletic schedule conflicts cannot be worked out between a student-athlete and their professor, a FAR can facilitate communication towards a solution. FARs write letters of recommendation and/or nomination for student-athletes for post-graduate honors and scholarships, and for graduate school applications.  Encourage your child to reach out to a FAR for assistance in balancing the athletic and academic demands of being a Bulldog:

  • Wendy McIntyre - Chair of the Department of Environmental Studies, professor, and loves fly fishing
  • Scott Randolph - Historian by training, Business professor, and railroad enthusiast
  • Liesder Mayea Rodriguez - Associate Professor of Spanish, Modern Literature and Languages

Our favorite day of the year is Commencement! Your child can and should graduate from the University of Redlands in four years.  Prior to their arrival at the university, they will be placed in a First-Year Seminar (FYS) program and their FYS faculty member will also serve as their academic advisor for at least their first year.   They will meet one-on-one with that academic advisor and a peer advisor (fellow student) to create an academic plan and course schedule.  Plenty of classes are available, but avoiding the 8 a.m. time slot may not be feasible, especially for freshman student-athletes while in season.  Please know that class registration is currently the same for all students.  Encourage your child to adhere to the class registration procedures for an optimal experience each semester.
