Redlands Women's Water Polo Falters to Cal Lutheran Regals

The University of Redlands women's water polo team took to the road to face Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Cal Lutheran on Saturday morning. Despite a close 3-5 score at halftime, the Regals had a big second half to send Redlands home with a 5-12 loss.

Cal Lutheran netted three goals in the first quarter, forcing Redlands to work from behind early.

The Bulldogs attempted the comeback in the second quarter, as sophomore center Kolby Kahahawai (Kailua, HI) fired one through the posts at the 5:48-mark. After the Regals matched the goal, Redlands freshman attack player Olivia Allen (Santa Monica, CA) responded less than 15 seconds later by netting her first goal of the game to make it a 2-4 tally. Kahahawai closed the gap even further when she put one past the Regal goalie for a 3-4 score with less than a minute left in the frame.

Unfortunately, the home team got a lucky, last-minute shot off that found the back of the net for a 3-5 score at the half.

The Regals continued to cruise in the final two periods by scoring seven goals to Redlands' two. Sophomore utility player Rachel Nelson (San Juan Capistrano, CA) was credited with the score in the third frame, as Kahahawai finished her day with a hat trick when she netted her final goal in the fourth.

With today's result, Redlands (8-21, 3-5 SCIAC) concludes the dual-match portion of the regular season and looks forward to competing in the three-day SCIAC Championship Tournament at the University of La Verne, starting on Friday, April 21.
