REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Tennis team returned to the courts Saturday with a match-up against No. 5 ranked University of Mary Washington.

The Maroon and Grey gave them all they could handle in the cold and windy conditions falling 7-1 at the Verdieck Tennis Courts.

The Bulldogs looked like they were going to make an early statement after doubles with the top two matches going the distance.  After going down 1-0 following a loss at No. 3, Redlands threatened at the other two positions.  Liv Rockwood (Park City, UT) and Mia Fitzgerald (Kilauea, HI) forced a breaker at No. 2, but couldn't pull out the win falling 8-7 (5).  Then at No. 1, Gabby Rockwood (Park City, UT) and Kendall Bolock (Yucaipa, CA) pushed early, but couldn't overcome a late break against the No. 8 ranked Abigail Moghtader/Lauren Quinn duo falling 8-6.

Down, but not out heading into singles UR made one final push picking up a point from Bolock at No. 4 who rolled to the convincing win 6-0, 6-1, putting Redlands on the board.  After a couple losses at No. 3 and No. 1 giving the Eagles the two points they needed to clinch the Bulldogs didn't go away quietly.  Fitzgerald at No. 5 competed in her two frames, but couldn't overcome a couple of breaks falling 6-2, 6-3.  Then at No. 2, Kiana Brady (Hermosa Beach, CA) showed off her grit and determination as a first year coming from behind against the No. 40 ranked Claire Coleman to force a ten point super tiebreaker, but couldn't complete the comeback dropping 6-3, 3-6, 10-6.

The last match on was unable to finish due to the rain, but it looked like Abby Nash (Bellevue, WA) was in total control and was set to pick up the second point for the Maroon and Grey.  She edged out her opponent at No. 6 in the first set 6-4 and was up 5-2 with match points before the match was called.

Coach's Thoughts

"We had chances in doubles and unfortunately they didn't swing our way.  The women competed great and I know they are fired up to get back out onto the practice court.  It was tough to go down 0-3, but the effort they showed in singles was awesome.  Even after being disappointed they fought for every point out there today and I'm proud of their efforts."

Coach's Shoutout

"Kendall Bolock flipped the page after a tough doubles match and played great in singles.  She has been putting in the work on and off the court and it paid off in her win.  I am really happy for her and looking forward to what she will bring throughout the season."
