Amidst the threat of rain, the No. 19 University of Redlands women's tennis team opened the 2016 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship Tournament with a solid 5-0 victory over Chapman University. After relocating the match to Claremont Tennis Club in an effort to find drier courts, the Bulldogs dominated the doubles and the first two singles matches to secure the win.

Senior Gabriela Vasquez (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) and junior Emily Murnin (Salt Lake City, UT) blanked their No. 3 opponents, before the freshman tandem of Kate Dolan (St. Louis, MO) and Elizabeth Johnson (Portland, OR) cruised to an 8-1 victory.  Seniors Natalie Etchegaray (Placentia, CA) and Lauren Villanueva (El Segundo, CA) sealed the deal on the sweep with their 8-4 performance at the No. 1 slot.

In singles, junior Stephanie Ramos (Sacramento, CA) shut out her No. 6 opponent, as Vasquez followed suit with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 5 position.

Redlands (15-7, 7-2 SCIAC) takes on the fourth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in the semifinal of the tournament at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 7, at the Pauley Tennis Complex on the campus of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
