Redlands Women's Soccer collects 2-1 win over Occidental

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Soccer team earned their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) win of the season Wednesday night with a 2-1 victory over Occidental College. The Bulldogs used goals from first-year Sami Salinas (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) and senior Nolan Mendonca (San Diego, Calif.) to avenge their earlier OT loss to the Tigers.

Salinas scored the go-ahead goal in the 31st minute when first-year Malia Kuhl (Sammamish, Wash.) sent a ball from 30 yards out into the box, which found Salinas who would go on to bang it home for the finish.

A few minutes later graduate Eva Vlassopoulos (Portland, OR) got into the mix looking to add to the UR lead getting off a pair of shots, one that missed wide and other which would be saved by Tiger keeper Ingrid Odmark.

Out of the half the Tigers provided a push early earning three corners within a three minute span, which led to three shots on goal forcing junior keeper Courtney Stewart (San Jose, Calif.) into a trio of save opportunities.

The eventual game winner for the Bulldogs came in the 62nd minute off the foot of Mendonca.  She took advantage of a deflected shot in the box that fell to her in front of the goal and she would finish for her second career goal, and first of the season.

The Tigers though didn't go away quietly, continuing to test Stewart and the Bulldog defense with a six-minute stretch highlighted by seven shots and five Stewart saves.

In the 84th minute Vlassopoulos looked like she would add the third goal on the night for UR beating the keeper to her left, but her ensuing shot would hit the post and deflect out.

Then with two minutes left and the match looking like it was over, the Tigers cut the deficit to one with a goal from Ella Endo, which gave OXY some new life. But the Maroon and Grey defensive unit stood tough over the final 90 seconds to secure the home win.

Redlands took 13 shots on the night with five on frame. Stewart finished with nine saves playing all 90:00 minutes, which tied a career-high from the first matchup with the Tigers back on September 8.

The Bulldogs get the weekend off before hosting Pomona-Pitzer next Wednesday, September 29 at 7:00pm at Farquhar Field.
