The University of Redlands women's soccer team suffered a tough 0-1 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in a non-conference road match on Saturday night. An early goal in the second half provided the slight edge for the Athenas.

Although neither team posed a dangerous threat to the other in the first half, senior goalkeeper Brittany Dinkins (Renton, WA) corralled a shot for the save in the first minute.

As the game progressed, the Bulldogs' backline stepped up in the 35th minute it came away with a defensive block, which was followed by another save from Dinkins. Senior forward Gabby Hart (Burien, WA) managed a shot on goal in the 37th minute, but the Athena goalkeeper made the stop to keep the game scoreless at the break.

In the second half, CMS mustered a goal form the top of the box less than two minutes into the period.

However, the Bulldogs nearly notched the equalizer in the 55th minute when junior forward Emily Falla (Woodinville, WA) stole a pass from 50 yards out and then fed it to senior forward Alexa Groesser (Denver, CO) for a one-on-one opportunity. Groesser sent a low-driven ball on goal, but it was deflected back into play by the defense.

As time wound down, CMS played possession soccer to drain the clock. Despite the Athenas' tactics, the Maroon and Gray earned three more shots but to no avail in the 0-1 loss.

For the game, Dinkins finished with four saves in the first half, while first-year goalkeeper Courtney Stewart (San Jose, CA) relived her to make two saves in the second.

Redlands (3-2-0) remains on the road for its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener against Occidental College on Wednesday, September 18, at 5:30 p.m.
