U of R Women's Lacrosse | Bulldogs’ winning streak ends at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Lacrosse team headed to Orange County Wednesday afternoon to take on Chapman University riding a three-game winning streak but saw it end as the Panthers would come out on top 17-8.  Redlands now moves to 3-5, 2-3 SCIAC. 

In the first quarter the Bulldogs held a 2-1 lead at the 8:35 mark.  Maeve Wiencek (Sherwood, OR) connected for the first goal of the game after returning from illness coming off a Maddie Bush (Ladera Ranch, CA) assist. Then after the tying goal from Chapman, Bush then scored herself to give the Bulldogs what would be their only lead of the contest. 

The Bulldogs tied the game up at three to start off the second quarter thanks to a second tally from Bush. Then after the Panthers extended their lead to two Joren Fettig (Bend, Ore.) connected :29 seconds later making it a one-score game for the fifth time. Right before the half CU would tack on another to make it a two-score margin at 6-4 after being held scoreless over the prior 8:29.    

The defining moment in the game came in the 3rd Quarter as the Bulldogs would get held scoreless, while allowing four Chapman tallies that moved the score to 10-4.  The six unanswered by CU, which spanned from the final minute of the first quarter till the 11:44 mark of the fourth would end thanks to first year Erin Steinhour (Poway, CA) who would find the back of the net thanks to another assist from Bush.      

The Bulldogs and Panthers traded goals after that with Bush and Wiencek adding a couple more tallies closing the gap to six at 13-7. But after that the Panthers would tack on another four goals before Celine Flaig (Redondo Beach, CA) would answer as time expired.   

The Bulldogs played a close game in many of the key stat categories, totaling 26 groundballs, 24 shots, and going 12-of-18 on clears.   

Individually five Bulldogs found the scoresheet: Fettig (one goal and one assist), Steinhour (one goal), Wiencek (two goals), Bush (three goals and two assists), and Flaig (one goal). Wiencek and Bush also added four ground balls. In goal Charlie Baum (Hesperia, CA) continued her strong first season playing lacrosse posting 11 saves as she faced 28 shots on-goal. 

Redlands has eight days away from competition before they return to non-conference action with a visit from DePauw University on Wednesday, March 30 at 7:00pm at Farquhar Field.
