The University of Redlands women's lacrosse team shouldered a 7-21 loss in their season-opening game on the road against Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday.

The Sagehens registered the first goal, but Redlands bounced back with a score off the stick of sophomore midfielder Sydney Louie (Lafayette, CA) on a free-position shot five minutes later to make it 1-1 nearly eight minutes into the game. Pomona-Pitzer created a two-score distance, but sophomore midfielder Joren Fettig (Bend, OR) closed the gap by slashing for an unassisted goal at the 15:53-mark to make it 2-3 with 15:53 left in the first half.

Despite the Sagehens firing back two quick goals less than a minute later, the Bulldogs created opportunities with a pair of free-position goals from senior midfielder Sadie Pickering (Tacoma, WA), and Maeve Wiencek (Sherwood, OR) to cut the deficit to 4-5 with 13:31 left before the break.

Unfortunately, Pomona-Pitzer closed the half on a 6-2 run to head into halftime with an 11-6 advantage.

The Sagehens continued to maintain momentum with 10 unanswered goals in the second half. Louie capitalized on her second free-position tally of the game, but Pomona-Pitzer took home a 21-7 win.

For the game, Louie registered a game-high three goals, while also dishing out an assist and scooping up four ground balls. Defensively, Fettig and junior midfielder Jessica Aguigui (Fallbrook, CA) aided the defense with a pair of caused turnovers each.

Redlands (0-1) seeks to bounce back in a SCIAC matchup at Cal Lutheran University on Wednesday, February 19, at 7 p.m.
