Bulldog Women's Basketball Set To Take On No. 23 Trine In Second Round of NCAA Tournament

On the heels of an impressive victory over No. 8 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday, the University of Redlands women's basketball team advances to face No. 23 Trine University (IN) tonight at 5 p.m. PST in the second round. Both teams enter the matchup with an identical record of 22-6 overall and 14-2 in their respective conferences. The Bulldogs received the automatic bid by winning the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Championship Tournament while Trine received an at-large bid to make its way to the tournament.

Senior guard Cassandra Lacey (Victorville, CA) poured in a season-high 26 points to lead her team to a 70-62 victory over No.8  Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday. Sophomore guard Alyssa Downs (South San Francisco, CA) also wreaked havoc with four three-pointers on her way to 18 points. The paint was in great hands with junior forward Kellis Dack (Vancouver, WA), who had 12 rebounds, and sophomore forward Hannah Jerrier (Canton, MA) with four blocks.

For the season, Downs leads the team with 14.5 points per game. She paces the SCIAC in three-point percentage at 41% and knocks down 2.9 treys per game. Jerrier led the conference in efficiency with a SCIAC-high 54.1% field-goal percentage from the field. Lacey puts up 12.0 points and dishes out a team-high 2.3 assists.

For Trine, the Thunder rolled over Benedictine University (IL), 65-37, in the first round on Friday. Senior guard Katy Steers (Portage, IN) and sophomore guard Kayla Wildman (Rockford, MI) led the way with 14 points each. Sophomore forward Kelsy Taylor (Louisville, KY) finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 boards.

For the season, sophomore guard Tara Bieniewicz (Chesterfield, MI) owns a team-high 12 points and records 1.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game. She also shoots 40.3% from behind the arc. Steers puts up 9.5 points and dishes out 4.4 assists and 2.3 steals. Wildman also averages 9.5 points on 42.1% shooting from the field.

The winner punches their ticket to the third round to face the winner of Bowdoin College (ME) and New York University on Friday, March, 13.
