Junior Cassandra Lacey and Sophomore Kellis Dack Named SCIAC Athletes of the Week for Women's Basketball

The University of Redlands hauled in both of the weekly women's basketball awards for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), with junior guard Cassandra Lacey (Victorville, CA) earning the Offensive Athlete of the Week and sophomore guard/forward Kellis Dack (Vancouver, WA) being named the Defensive Athlete of the Week for January 14-20.

The duo stepped up to lead the Bulldogs to a pair of wins last week, as Redlands defeated Occidental College, 52-46, and then pushed past the University of La Verne, 75-74, with both results coming on the road.

Lacey averaged a double-double with 16.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in a fine performance.  She went a near-perfect 13-for-14 from the charity stripe and recorded six assists and two steals on the week.  In 74 total minutes, she received only one foul.  Against Occidental, Lacey contributed 13 points and 13 rebounds before going off for 20 points with seven boards in the tight win at La Verne.

Dack continued to shine as a defensive-savvy Bulldog with additional scoring responsibilities in the team's wins last week.  She hauled in 18 total rebounds, including 14 on the defensive end.  Dack was just one rebound off of recording a double-double in each game. Overall, she registered two steals and two blocks for a solid showing.  Finally, she chipped in 21 total points while shooting 58.8% from the field.

This marks the Redlands women's basketball team's first athletes of the week for the current season and completes a sport-sweep of the honors with both men's basketball selections.  For the men, senior guard Joey Sponheim (Redlands, CA) was named the SCIAC Offensive Athlete of the Week and first-year guard/forward Gary Menary (Grass Valley, CA) received the Defensive Athlete of the Week award.

On the heels of two road-wins, Redlands (7-11, 4-5 SCIAC) looks forward to returning home to Currier Gym on Wednesday, January 23, for a 7 p.m. showdown against the Whittier College Poets.
