Bulldog Men’s Track & Field Takes Fourth at SCIAC Championships | Total Nine Podium Finishes

WHITTIER, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Track & Field team put together a strong two days at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Track & Field Championships hosted by Whittier College taking 4th overall with a two-day total of 98 Points, coming on nine podium finishes.

It was a slow start to the two-day event as the Bulldogs brought in 17 points on Day 1 before erupting for 81 on Day 2 creating some pushback against the field.  Despite the seven podium finishes on the second day, it wouldn't be enough to get within the top three as they would fall behind Claremont-M-S (1st – 225 Points), Pomona-Pitzer (2nd – 123 Points), and Whittier College (3rd – 115 Points).  They did beat out Occidental College (5th – 83 Points), the University of La Verne (6th – 48 Points), Chapman University (7th – 35 Points), Cal Lutheran University (8th – 29 Points), and Caltech (9th – 17 Points).          

Day 1

The Maroon and Grey earned a pair of top three performances in two events on Day 1.  Jack Gordon (Las Vegas, NV) took 3rd in the Pole Vault with a height of 4.71m and Markelle Raymond-Hill would grab 3rd in the Long Jump with a length of 6.72m.

Other notable performances by the Bulldogs included Michael Meheen (Carmel, CA) in the Pole Vault who finished 7th (4.41m), and Jacob Huset (Tacoma, WA) in the Long Jump who went 6th with a 6.28m jump.         

Day 2

Redlands got off to a hot start on the second day of competition poised for a comeback as they saw another ten athletes reach the podium stand.  The 4x100 Relay team excited the crowd to start off competition taking home the top time of a 41.38.  The team consisted of Jamir Jones (Fairfield, CA), Cooper Malerstein (Huntington Beach, CA), Cristian Megas (Palmdale, CA), and Raymond-Hill.  Jones then returned in the 400m dash to take 2nd overall with a time of 49.00.  From this group Megas competed in the sprints taking 3rd in the 100m with a time of 10.82, while Raymond-Hill would edge him out in 2nd boasting a time of 10.78. 

Tucker Cargile (Denver, CO) continues to impress in whatever event he participates in and he did just that in the 1500m taking home the top time with a 3:51.42.  Huset returned on the second day to compete in his signature event, the High Jump and what a performance he had getting to a height of 2.02m, which was the top mark. 

Tyler Davies (Lake Forest, CA) was the last Bulldog to podium, which came in the Shotput where he took 3rd overall with a throw of 13.81m.

Other top performances for the Maroon and Grey included Megas in the 200m finishing 8th (34.31), Ronan Byrne (Portola Valley, CA) in the 800m who took 7th (1:55.56), Rogelio Salicido (Beaumont, CA) in the 10000m coming in 11th (34.14.53), Gael Orozco (Claremont, CA) who took 6th in the 110m Hurdles (16.34), Owen Schmitz (Fremont, CA) in the High Jump taking 5th (1.87m) before going 4th in the Triple Jump (13.33m) right in front of Allyn Asberry-Blanco (Orange County, NY) who finished 5th (13.25m).

Wyatt Gibson joined Davies in the shotput finishing 11th (11.60m), Davies would go 14th in the Discus (31.57m) and Sebastian Saucedo (Modesto, CA) would post a 17th place finish in the Javelin (36.58m).

The 4x400 Relay team of Jones, Hunter Greer (Wildomar, CA), Byrne, and Aidan Strealy (Lake Oswego, OR) ended the championships coming in with a time of 3:26.79, which put them 6th overall.                          

Redlands returns to their non-conference schedule this Saturday, May 7 when they travel to Occidental College for the Oxy Invitational beginning at 11:00am.
