Bulldog Women’s Track & Field Takes Second at SCIAC Championships | Total 14 Podium Finishes

WHITTIER, Calif. – The University of Redlands Women's Track & Field team put together an outstanding two days at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Track & Field Championships hosted by Whittier College taking 2nd overall with a two-day total of 174 Points, which are the most points earned in program history at the conference finale.  These 174 points came on 14 podium finishes, which put them behind Claremont-M-S by 24.5.

It was a two-team race competing for the 2022 SCIAC Championship Title with the Bulldogs jumping out in front late in the day Sunday.  But it came down to one event (5000m) that helped the Athenas jump back on top and hold on for the title.  Rounding out the rest of the field included Whittier College (3rd – 117 Points), Cal Lutheran University (4th – 71.5 points), Pomona-Pitzer (5th – 65 points), Caltech (6th – 41 Points), Occidental College (7th – 40 Points), Chapman University (7th – 40 Points), and the University of La Verne (9th – 34 Points).

Day 1

Redlands got off to a strong start on Day 1 getting five athletes on the podium stand.  Isabella Glenn (Seattle, WA) picked up the first points for the Maroon and Grey in the 3000m Steeplechase, her signature event and she put on a show going back and forth with Riley Harmon (Claremont-M-S) eventually coming in second with a time of 10:56.73, getting edged out at the finish line.  After that the Field Events took over with Ciara Aw (Seattle, WA) and Courtney O'Neal (Las Vegas, NV) going 2nd (5.48m) and 3rd (5.25m) in the Long Jump.

Noelle Chavez came out tough in the Discus, winning the event with a throw of 40.55m.  The very next event, the Hammer, Leslie Sernaque Falcon (Concord, CA) took over finishing 3rd overall with a mark of 40.44m. 

Other notable performances from the first day of competition included Alexis Wallace (Orangevale, CA) in the 10000m taking 7th (39:51.30), Maigan Adams (Los Angeles, CA) and Christen Wiley (South San Francisco, CA) posting marks of 5.12m and 4.93m putting them in 6th and 7th in the Long Jump, Timony Sherry (Shoreline, WA) coming in 8th in the Discus (33.45m), and Chavez falling just outside the top three in the Hammer, going 4th (39.37m).

Day 2

The Bulldogs returned on the second day of the championships and right from the first event made their presence felt getting twelve athletes on the podium stand.  Andrea Lyon (Danville, CA) totaled three victories on the day coming in the 200m (24.50), 400m (56.70), and the 4x100 Relay (47.11).  Alexandra Ackerman (Lake Elsinore, CA) joined her with multiple podium finishes taking 2nd in the 100m (12.10) and then joining the winning 4x100 Relay team (47.11).

Ella Bachmeier (Rancho Capistrano, CA) took home a second place finish in the 400m Hurdles (66.33) and finished just outside the top three in the 100m Hurdles coming in 4th with a 15.25.  Sherry returned on the second day taking 3rd in the Shotput, her signature event with a throw of 11.32m. 

But the biggest event that took home the most points for the Bulldogs was the Triple Jump where Adams, Wiley, and Aw went 1-2-3 with marks of 11.57m, 10.84m, and 10.61m, respectively. 

Other notable finishes on the day included Sydney Harness (Henderson, NV) and O'Neal who joined the winning 4x100 Relay team along with taking 4th and 6th in the 100m with times of 12.35 and 12.55.  Harness also ran a 25.11 in the 200m.  Chloe Bullock (Hood River, OR) earned a spot in the 800m Final, but couldn't make her way up the leaderboard finishing 8th with a 2:20.82.  Glenn competed in the 1500m as well and jumped three spots from the prelims to the finals, but it put her in 6th with a 4:47.84. 

The decisive event that allowed CMS to regain the lead came late in the 5000m where they had runners go 1-2-3-5-6.  Glenn was the top finisher for the Bulldogs taking 4th (18:09.06), while Wallace would come in 8th (18:41.96) and Sheriane Greene (Grass Valley, CA) in 13th (19:25.27).

The 4x400 Relay team finished two spots outside a podium finish taking 5th with a 4:04.62.  The team included Bachmeier, Cece Matteson (Seattle, WA), Bullock, and Lyon.  Savannah Engler (Petaluma, CA) was the lone Bulldog to compete in the Pole Vault finishing 7th with a height of 3.07m.  Joining Sherry in the Shotput was Chavez who would take 6th with a throw of 11.04m.  Hannah Albrecht (Cottage Grove, OR) was the last Bulldog to compete in the Javelin coming in 9th with a heave of 29.65m.                                                      

Redlands returns to their non-conference schedule this Saturday, May 7 when they travel to Occidental College for the Oxy Invitational beginning at 11:00am.
