Redlands Thrives on Day One of NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships

The University of Redlands track & field teams jumped into action at the 2018 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in La Crosse, WI, on Thursday with solid results.

Sophomore Chyenne Kimble (Big Bear Lake, CA) rose to first place through four events of the Heptathlon with 2,855 points.  She opened the day by winning the 100 Hurdles with a time of 14.56 as one of two competitors to go under 15 seconds.  She also topped the competition in the 200 Meters by crossing the finish line with the only sub-26-time of the race at 25.56.  Finally, she registered a height of 4' 10 ¼" in the High Jump and a mark of 32' 3 ½" in the Shot Put.  She looks forward to competing in the Long Jump, Javelin, and 800 Meters during Friday's action.

In her inaugural NCAA appearance, senior Mandy Widen (Vail, AZ) improved four spots from her seed position of 18th to tie for 14th in the Pole Vault by clearing a height of 11' 5 ¾".

During the track preliminaries, the top finisher from each heat plus the next best six qualify for Saturday's finals.  Sophomore Jessica Fields (Las Vegas, NV) got things off to a great start for the Maroon and Gray by uncorking a time of 1:02.25 to finish eighth in the 400 Hurdles.  She ran in the quickest heat, which yielded six of the nine finalists.

For the Bulldog men, the speedy 4x100 Relay of first-years Domanick Murray (Palm Springs, CA) and MJ Wheeler (St. Louis, MO), junior Luke Bohlinger (Mercer Island, WA), and sophomore Maliq Champion (Beaumont, CA) also advanced to Saturday's final with today's results.  The quartet put together a time of 40.87 to finish second in the first heat and third in the prelims to move on in the competition.

Furthermore, Bohlinger completed the excellent outing for the Bulldogs with his qualifying time in the 200 Meters.  He fired off a 22.07 to finish second in the third heat and seventh in the prelims to make it to Saturday's final.

Various Bulldogs look forward to competing in the Shot Put, High Jump, 100 Hurdles, 100 Meters, 800 Meters, and the Heptathlon during Friday's action at the Veteran's Memorial Field Sports Complex at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse.
