Senior Alison Smith Captures 100 Hurdles National Championship, Anchors All-America 4x100 Relay in Strong Finish to NCAAs

The 10th-ranked University of Redlands women's track & field team shined on the final day of the 2017 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Spires Institute in Geneva, OH, with a national championship and a pair of All-America honors.

Senior Alison Smith (McKinleyville, CA) fired off the only sub-14-second time of the final by crossing the finish line in 13.98 to win the 2017 NCAA 100 Hurdles Championship.  In a tight race, she moved from fourth to first in the final half of the race with an incredible kick in the last 10 meters.  In addition to the national title, Smith becomes an All-American in the event to cap off an already outstanding four-year career with the Maroon and Gray.

She is the first Bulldog to win this event since Margo Edwards, who captured back-to-back titles in 1984 and 1985.  Smith is the first women's national champion for Redlands since Natalie Calderon won the Long Jump and Triple Jump Championships in 2008.

Earlier in the day, Smith also anchored the 4x100 Relay that eked out an All-America time of 48.09 with an eighth-place showing.  She teamed up with sophomore Kara Romani (Sacramento, CA), freshman Chyenne Kimble (Big Bear Lake, CA), and senior Jasmine Ramos (Santa Fe Springs, CA) for the stellar performance.

With the Bulldogs' two outstanding finishes, Redlands earned 11 points as a team in the national championship standings.
