Madison Petschauer Earns NCAA B-Cut in 100 Fly | U of R Top-10 Times Fall

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The University of Redlands Swimming teams made some big moves after Day 3 of competition during the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships.

Six events took place, which included the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back, and the 400 Medley Relay.

The Bulldogs saw some adjustments in the standings and are in a Dawg Fight heading into the final day of competition.  The women have moved up into 5th with 317 Points, only 3.5 points behind Occidental (4th - 320.5 Points).  They have moved ahead of Caltech (6th – 301 Points) and lead Cal Lutheran (7th – 189 Points), Whittier (8th – 169 Points), and La Verne (9th – 82 Points).

On the men's side the Bulldogs have dropped a spot into 6th with 196.5 Points trailing Occidental by .5 a point for 5th (197 points).  They are ahead of Chapman (7th – 191.5 points), Whittier (171 Points), and La Verne (108 Points). 

Men

Highlighting the day for the men was Lucas Walker (Mountain View, CA) and Thomas Long (Brea, CA) who moved to No. 3 and No. 7, respectively in the University of Redlands Top 10 List in the 100 Breast after posting times of 57.29 and 58.03.  Walker also swam the 4th fastest 100 Backstroke in program history leading off the Medley Relay. 

Walker earned himself a spot in the 400 IM Finals and he would take home 13 points for UR after posting a 4:07.22.  Davis Wingard (Springfield, OR) competed in the same event, but in the Consolation Final and he would add another two points finishing 17th with a 4:13.01.

Drew Heaston (Corona, CA) was the lone Bulldog to compete in the 100 Fly and would take part in the Consolation Final finishing 16th with a 51.83.  Blake Eddow (Corona, CA) had a chance to pick up big points in the 200 Free and came away with six after coming in 13th with a 1:41.90.  He was joined by Memphis Gile (Redlands, CA) who came in 18th with a 1:43.84.

Darquez Morrison (Springfield, MO) reached the Consolation Final in the 100 Backstroke adding another three points to the total after taking 16th with a 57.60.  Then to cap off the night, the Bulldogs fell unfortunate with an opportunity to make a big jump after the 400 Medley Relay, but the 'A' team of Walker, Long, Heaston, and Eddow were DQd due to an early jump on the final leg.  Their 'B' team picked them up though with eight points as Tom Jansen (Pleasant Hill, CA), Dan Bajda (Lombard, Ill.), Jack Forsythe (Ladera Ranch, CA), and Ron Gvishi (Albany, CA) would finish 15th with a time of 3:35.17, dropping almost seven seconds off of their seed time.                       

Women

On the other side the women had a spectacular night making a big jump thanks to Madison Petschauer (Cary, NC) who put together an NCAA B-Cut in the 100 Fly, coming in at a 56.00, collecting 16 points for the Maroon and Grey.  Hanna Parker (Seattle, WA) also created fireworks for the Bulldogs in the 100 Breast posting the 4th fastest time in program history with a 1:05.56 (16 Points).  She also came away with the fastest time in the 50 Breast in program history. 

Makenna Parenti (Rocklin, CA) was another scorer in the 100 Fly finishing 10th atop the Consolation Final with a 58.25 that brought in an additional 10 points.  Then Abby Springer (Paso Robles, CA) and Sarah Szafranski (Houston, TX) would combine for another three points as they would go 17th (1:00.61) and 18th (1:01.56).

Jacqueline Setlich (Laguna Niguel, CA) was the lone Bulldog in the 200 Free finishing 15th in the Consolation Final with a time of 1:59.61 (4 Points).  Joining Parker in the 100 Breast final was Petschauer and Madison Southmayd (Anthem, AZ) who went 8-9 with a 1:05.87 and 1:07.07, respectively.  They brought in a combined 25 points for the U of R.

Sydney Nakagawa (Vancouver, WA) was competing in the 100 Back final and after posting a 57.91 in the prelims, came away with a 58.81 in the final that put her 8th overall (13 Points).  Gaby Hayon (Agoura Hills, CA) and Courtney Prefontaine (San Clemente, CA) both made the Consolation Final and they impressed taking 14th (1:01.70) and 18th (1:02.51) combining for another six points. 

In the final event of the day, the 400 Medley Relay, the 'A' team of Nakagawa, Parker, Petschauer, and Setlich would go 3:57.34, over two seconds faster than their seed time that put them 4th overall.  This brought in 34 points, which then led to the 'B' team of Prefontaine, Southmayd, Parenti, and Hayon who would take 15th with a 4:09.03 adding another eight points.                  

The final day of the Championships will bring on another six events, including the 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast, 1650 Free, the 200 Fly, and then the 400 Free Relay.
