Men's Swimming Medals in the 50 Free and 200 Free Relay to Highlight a Solid Day Two of the SCIAC Swimming & Diving Championships

After day two of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic (SCIAC) Swimming & Diving Championships in Commerce, the University of Redlands men's and women's teams stayed consistent in third and fifth place with 263 and 178 points, respectively on Friday.

To highlight the day for the men, junior Jack McCormick (Santa Rosa, CA) turned in an All-Conference performance in the 50 Free by stopping the clock in second place with a time of 20.91. McCormick went on to join first-year Jack Forsythe (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA), sophomore Samuel Ayers (Orinda, CA), and senior Matt Skinner (Lakewood, CA) for a bronze-medal finish in the 200 Free relay final with a time of 1:22.79. This impressive quartet also set a new Redlands record in the 200 Free Relay. 

Later in the day, sophomore Tom Jansen (Pleasant Hill, CA) represented Redlands in the consolation final of the 500 Free and touched the wall in 4:35.98 for a second-place finish.

Next, senior Kyle Jackson (Naperville, IL) claimed second in the consolation final of the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.19, while junior Eric Forbes (Ladera Ranch, CA) was close behind in fifth with a time of 1:55.88. In the 200 Free Relay, Jackson teamed up with seniors Michael Talag (Lakewood, CA), Carson Brett (Exeter, CA), and junior Rafael Zasas (Johannesburg, South Africa) in the 200 Free Relay consolation final for a second-place finish in 1:25.07.

For the women, sophomore Sydney Nakagawa (Vancouver, WA) knocked .03 seconds off her preliminary time to take seventh in the 50 Free final with a time of 24.11 for the Bulldogs' top finish of the day.

In the consolation final of the 200 Yard IM, senior Julia Hagenbaumer (Naperville, IL), junior Olivia Cano (Dublin, CA), and first-year Leila Alejos (Portland, OR) provided points in fifth, seventh, and ninth, respectively.

To end the day, sophomore Courtney Prefontaine (Laguna Niguel, CA), Emily Heaston (Corona, CA), Madison Southmayd (Anthem, AZ), and first-year Leila Alejos (Portland, OR) captured points with a third-place finish in the consolation final of the 200 Free Relay final in a time of 1:40.97.

Action picks back up tomorrow, February 22, at 9 a.m. in Commerce for day three of the SCIAC Championships.
