The University of Redlands swimming & diving teams returned to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) competition on Saturday by hosting the Caltech Beavers and Chapman University Panthers at the Thompson Aquatic Center. With the men's and women's teams registering 15 overall podium finishes each, the Bulldogs prevailed in all four match-ups. The men earned a 148-89 win over Chapman and edged the Beavers, 121-115. The Redlands women came out victorious over the Panthers by a score of 126-115 while defeating Caltech, 134.5-105.5.
For the women, the Maroon and Gray gained four first-place showings to go along with five silver medals and six third-place showings. The men won seven events while finishing second and third four times apiece.
First-year Emily Heaston (Corona, CA) started a solid day by out-touching the competition in the 200 Free with a time of 2:02.40. First-year Jacqueline Setlich (Laguna Niguel, CA) closely followed in second place at 2:02.56.
In addition, Heaston topped the 500 Free with her time of 5:32.86 before contributing to the Bulldogs' second-place 400 Free Relay that clocked a time of 3:57.02. She joined forces with first-year Makenna Parenti (Rocklin, CA), sophomore Olivia Cano (Dublin, CA), and senior IvyLee Senn (Novato, CA) as an effective quartet.
Parenti also uncorked a mark of 2:15.04 in the 200 Fly, which landed her in a tie for first place. First-year Sydney Nakagawa (Vancouver, WA) shined in the 200 Back by touching the wall in 2:14.13 for the win. Furthermore, Nakagawa added a silver-medal time of 25.62 in the 50 Free.
In diving, junior Sami Scarano (Boulder, CO) paced the Bulldogs with her pair of third-place performances. She scored 198.15 on the one-meter board before registering 193.40 on the three-meter.
The men started the meet off well with a winning effort in the 400 Medley Relay. The talented quartet of first-years Anders Stenfjord (Shoreline, WA), Lucas Walker (Mountain View, CA), Derrick Garcia (Orinda, CA), and Samuel Ayers (Orinda, CA) fired off a time of 3:37.92 to win the first race of the day.
Ayers kept things rolling with his first-place time of 1:47.57 in the 200 Free, while Walker owned the 200 Individual Medley with the only sub-two-minute effort at 1:59.71 for the gold.
In the 100 Free, Ayers continued to impress by winning this event with a time of 47.86. He was joined by senior Aaron Bauer (Garden Grove, CA), who unleashed the only other sub-50-second mark when he touched the wall in 49.25 for second place.
Finally, Walker capped off a solid meet by taking home the gold in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:09.40.
Junior Jacob Miner (Antioch, CA) and sophomore Max Spiegel (Englewood, CA) offered a 1-2 punch in the diving competition. Miner won both events with a total of 250.40 on the three-meter board and a score of 214.25 on the one-meter. Spiegel earned second-place scores of 194.20 and 209.90, with his higher output coming on the one-meter board.
Redlands hosts Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges for Senior Day at the Thompson Aquatic Center on Saturday, January 19, at 10:30 a.m.
