Redlands Men Split, Bulldog Women Fall in Swim & Dive Meet against Chapman and Occidental

The University of Redlands swimming & diving teams headed to Orange for Saturday's Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) tri-meet against Chapman University and Occidental College.  The Bulldogs struggled to surpass the opponents, with the men recording the only victory of the day with a 182-116 showing against the Panthers.

The Bulldog divers earned multiple top-three scores, with sophomore Jacob Miner (Antioch, CA) highlighting the crew with a first-place score of 305.45 on the three-meter board and a second-place tally of 258.25 on the one-meter board.  First-year Max Spiegel (Englewood, CO) impressed with his second-place finish in the three-meter competition (277.85) and third-place effort on the one-meter board (236.30).  Sophomore Sami Scarano (Boulder, CO) took second in both women's competitions with her scores of 239.40 (3M) and 272.25 (1M).

For men's swimming, senior Henry Stuckenschmidt (Fresno, CA) swam a winning time of 17:04.73 in the 1650 Free, as senior Brian Wright (Kent, WA) out-touched the competition in the 100 Breast with the only sub-minute mark at 59.95.  Wright also produced a second-place time of 2:17.50 in the 200 Breast for a solid outing.  First-year Eric Forbes (Ladera Ranch, CA) pushed him to the finish by uncorking a third-place mark just 13-hundredths behind him at 2:17.63.

In the 200 Free, first-year Rafael Zasas (Johannesburg, South Africa) and junior Aaron Bauer (Garden Grove, CA) teamed up for second and third place, respectively.  Zasas hit the wall in 1:47.28, while Bauer closely followed in 1:47.83.  Bauer also finished second in the 100 Free with a time of 47.89.

The men's 4x100 Free Relay of Forbes, Zasas, Wright, and Bauer came in second by touching the wall in 3:14.97.

For the women, senior Emily Waddell (Bellevue, WA) performed well in the freestyle events, as she captured the gold medal in the 200 with a time of 1:59.03 and took second in the 50 by touching the wall in 25.16.  Finally, she completed the cycle with a third-place time of 55.41 in the 100 Free.

In addition, first-year Olivia Cano (Dublin, CA) swam a time of 2:31.08 to finish second in the 200 Breast, while first-year Karina Lanning (Cupertino, CA) completed the 200 Fly in 2:22.22 for second place.

Redlands (W: 1-3, M: 2-2) returns home to the Thompson Aquatic Center on Saturday, January 20, for a 10:30 a.m. meet against the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
