Bulldog Swimming & Diving Splits Meet with Cal Lutheran

The University of Redlands swimming & diving program faced off against the Cal Lutheran University Kingsmen and Regals this past Saturday in Thousand Oaks. The Maroon and Gray swam very well, with the women hauling in a 132-108 victory and the men falling just short in a 114-125 defeat.

On the women's side, the Bulldogs produced 24 top-three finishes on the day, including seven gold, nine silver, and eight bronze medals.

Junior Jessica Kolsky (Red Wing, MN) kicked off the winning momentum by placing atop the podium on the three-meter board after amassing 164.75 points.

Sophomore Lindsay Nichols (Arroyo Grande, CA) snagged the gold in the one-meter competition by earning a score of 182.50. Kolsky continued to shine by reeling in a second-place finish with a point-total of 172.20.

The 200 Medley Relay of senior Baily Clem (Napa, CA), sophomore Claire Stuhr (Portland, OR), freshman Courtney Schmidt (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA), and sophomore Emily Waddell (Bellevue, WA) topped the field with a time of 2:01.50.

The women were nearly dominant in the individual events by sweeping the podium on three occasions in various races. Stuhr hauled in the gold in the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:14.52, with junior Jessica Rivers (Renton, WA) following in second place in 2:19.24 and sophomore Rachel Haney (Redmond, WA) completing the top-three sweep with a third-place time of 2:19.46. All three Bulldogs registered season-best times in the process.

The Bulldogs also covered the podium in the 100 Back, as Haney touched the wall first with a mark of 1.02.50. Sophomore Danielle Miller (Hood River, OR) and Clem backed Haney's effort with times of 1:04.59 and 1:05.90, respectively.

The final medal clean-up was in the 100 Breast, as Stuhr led the way again with a time of 1:11.52. Schmidt reeled in the silver medal with a final time of 1:14.09, followed by a bronze finish from freshman Alden Lovaas (Colorado Springs, CO), who touched the wall in 1:17.55.

In addition, junior Ellie Jaques (Covina, CA) swam out to a first-place finish in the 100 Free by touching the wall with a season-best time of 54.48.

On the men's side, the Bulldogs performed at a high level by hauling in 22 top-three finishes, which consisted of four first-place feats, eight second-place showings, and 10 third-place times.

A duo of divers consisting of sophomore Henry Stuckenschmidt (Fresno, CA) and junior Miko Mallari (Palo Alto, CA) finished back-to-back in the one-meter diving competition to kick off the day. Stuckenschmidt hauled in the gold with a point-total of 144.60, while Mallari produced a silver-medal score of 136.95. Mallari went on to take second on the three-meter board with a tally of 124.25.

On the swimming front, the Bulldogs got off to a hot start by reeling in first and second place in the 200 Medley Relay. Junior Will Tyrrell (Portland, OR), freshman Zack Amendola (Palos Heights, IL), freshman Joe Widuch (Naperville, IL), and freshman Aaron Bauer (Garden Grove, CA) led the race with a time of 1:39.00. Freshman Rowan Harrity (Troutdale, OR), junior Jake Schurkman (Norco, CA), sophomore Cory Winter (Ripon, CA), and freshman Mitchell Walker (Kearns, UT) backed their counterparts with a time of 2:04.00.

Tyrrell continued to capture gold-medal finishes for the Maroon and Gray by touching the wall first in the 100 Free with a season-best time of 48.12.

Junior Eric Bugna (Vancouver, WA) added to the first-place trend with a time of 56.73 in the 100 Back, while Winter backed Bugna's efforts with a second-place time of 57.58.

In addition, Amendola and senior Patrick Fink (San Pedro, CA) provided a solid combination in the 200 Free with their respective times of 1:47.80 and 1:50.72 for second and third place. Finally, Amendola teamed up with freshman Lucas Ulmer in a solid showing in the 100 Fly. Amendola clocked a second-place time of 53.17, with Ulmer quickly following in third at 54.79. Both of Amendola's efforts resulted in season-best marks.

The Bulldogs take to the pool once again on Saturday, February 6, as they host Occidental College and Chapman University in a SCIAC tri-meet at 10 a.m. at the Thompson Aquatic Center. Prior to the meet, Redlands will celebrate its seniors in their final home meet of the season.
