Redlands Swimmers Earn NCAA “B” Times as Both Teams Sit in Third after Day Two of SCIAC Championships

The University of Redlands swimming teams completed day two of the 2014 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships on Saturday, registering consistent results for both programs to sit in third place.  The men boast 430 points and are just 28.5 points behind second-place Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, while the women have 391 points in a tight race for that position.

After the men got off to a difficult start with a disqualified relay, the Bulldogs bounced back with a two-three finish in the 400 Individual Medley.  Both junior Jeff Depew (Naperville, IL) and senior David Ortyn (Bainbridge Island, WA) registered NCAA "B" times in the final, with Depew touching the wall in 4:01.77 for second and Ortyn completing the race in 4:02.26 for third.

Senior Brent Reed (Dublin, CA) represented the Bulldogs in the final of the 100 Fly, as he finished fifth with a time of 50.53, which was 0.74 faster than his preliminary performance.

Amidst three Bulldogs in the final of the 200 Free, junior Eric LoPrete (Beaverton, OR) just missed out on the podium with his fourth-place finish of 1:43.10.  In addition, sophomore Nelson Glendinning (Philadelphia, PA) and senior Spencer Peugh (Alamo, CA) uncorked solid times to take sixth (1:44.69) and tie for seventh (1:45.51), respectively.

Freshman Eric Bugna (Vancouver, WA) competed in the last individual final of the day, registering a seventh-place mark of 53.54 in the 100 Back.

Redlands' quartet of Ortyn, Depew, Glendinning, and LoPrete fired off an NCAA "B" time of 6:52.13 to take second in the 800 Free Relay.  This was a huge improvement of the team's preliminary mark and more than eight seconds faster than the third-place relay in the final.

The women opened the day with a seventh-place showing in the 200 Medley Relay, as freshmen Savannah Long (Kennesaw, GA), Jessica Rivers (Renton, WA), and Leah Bolin (Oshkosh, WI) joined forces with junior Summer Harp (San Bernardino, CA) for a time of 1:52.14.

Individually, junior Haley Thiltgen (San Diego, CA) uncorked a "B"-cut time of 4:33.81 in the 400 IM to take second.  Freshman Ellie Jacques (Covina, CA) just missed out on a spot on the podium with her fourth-place performance of 4:36.31, which was also an NCAA "B" standard.

Highlighting the 200 Free, sophomore Lauren Robeznieks (Tigard, OR) uncorked a mark of 1:55.01 for fourth place.  Elsewhere, senior Chandra Lukes (Escondido, CA) came in third in the 100 Back with a "B" time of 57.77.

Finally, the 800 Free Relay of Jacques, Robeznieks, Harp, and Lukes put together a third-place performance that was nearly 10 seconds faster than its preliminary time, touching the wall in 7:47.42 during the night session.
