Redlands Swimming & Diving Crushes Caltech

The University of Redlands swimming & diving teams enjoyed a wildly successful meet on Saturday as both the men and women crushed Caltech.  The men dominated the Beavers, 178-31, while the Bulldog women topped Caltech in convincing fashion, 200-24.  Highlighted by 24 first-place races, Redlands saw numerous swimmers and divers contribute to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) triumph.

For the men, the quartet of sophomore Ryan Lank (Brea, CA), freshman Luke Marshall (Lake Oswego, OR), sophomore Chaz Bruckman (Albuquerque, NM), and senior Spencer Peugh (Alamo, CA) won the 200 Medley Relay, just beating out the other top-Bulldog squad by touching the wall in a first-place time of 1:46.38.

Bulldog senior Andy Bone (Claremont, CA) won the uncontested 1000 Free with a solid early-season time of 11:21.66, while in the 200 Free, Peugh outswam his fellow teammates with a winning time of 1:53.07.  Senior Brent Reed (Dublin, CA) paced the field in a swift 50 Free, nabbing the first-place finish in 21.91 seconds.

In the 200 IM, freshman Eric Bugna (Vancouver, WA) impressed, taking the top spot overall with a mark of 2:03.11, while Marshall finished in second with a time of 2:06.04.

Elsewhere, in the 100 Fly, Reed grabbed another first-place finish for the Maroon and Gray, uncorking a time of 54.60, while in the 100 Free, senior David Ortyn (Bainbridge Island, WA) took top honors with a mark of 48.54 seconds. 

Bugna continued his strong day and impressive rookie campaign with a win in the 100 Back, touching the wall in 55.69 seconds, while in the 500 Free, senior Patrick Wall (St. Louis, MO) won the event for the U of R with a first-place mark of 5:12.58.

Closing out the day for the men, junior Jeff Depew (Naperville, IL) uncorked a winning time in the 100 Breast (1:02.69), while the 200 Free Relay of Reed, Bone, Depew and sophomore Jake Knell (Riverside, CA) out-touched the other top Bulldog squad for first place with a time of 1:32.61.

In the diving events, U of R freshman Miko Mallari (Palo Alto, CA) registered a couple of second-place finishes, scoring 162.90 in the three-meter event, while racking up 140.35 points in the one-meter dive.

On the women's side, the Bulldogs dominated in all facets.  Early on in the day, the quartet of sophomore Bailey Clem (Napa, CA), freshman Ellie Jaques (Covina, CA) freshman Leah Bolin (Oshkosh, WI), and freshman Savannah Long (Kennesaw, GA) combined for a first-place time of 2:01.48 in the 200 Medley Relay. 

Bulldog junior Summer Harp (San Bernardino, CA) won the 1000 Free with a mark of 11:24.40, while Long paced the field in the 200 Free with a winning time of 2:04.81.

Sophomore Lauren Robeznieks (Tigard, OR) uncorked the top time in the 50 Free (25.73), just out-touching Jaques who notched a time of 25.78.  In addition, junior Haley Thiltgen (San Diego, CA) won the 200 IM with a mark of 2:21.38.

Elsewhere for the U of R women, Bolin nabbed top honors in the 100 Fly with a mark of 1:05.33, while in the 100 Free, Robeznieks recorded another first-place time of 55.70 for Redlands.  Jaques tallied an individual first-place mark in the 100 Back (1:04.32), while fellow freshman Jessica Rivers (Renton, WA) took the top spot in the 500 Free (5:33.38).

Closing out the day for Redlands was junior Rachel Weinstein (Oak Harbor, WA) who captured first place in the 100 Breast (1:11.87), while the 200 Free Relay foursome of Harp, Rivers, Thiltgen, and Robeznieks uncorked a time of 1:45.19, easily winning the event for the U of R.

In the diving events, freshman Jessica Kolsky (Red Wing, MN) blew away the field, scoring 184.35 at the one-meter height, and 171.35 in the three-meter dive.

Redlands returns to the pool on December 13, 14, and 15 when select members of the Bulldog squad will compete at the 2013 Collegiate Winter Invitational at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center in Commerce, CA.  The event is hosted by the University of La Verne.
