U of R Softball Sweeps SCIAC Weekly Awards For Second Time This Season

The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced earlier today that the University of Redlands softball team swept the weekly awards for the second time this season after an impressive performance against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. First-year catcher Megan Watkins (Beaumont, CA) earned Hitter of Week, while first-year pitcher Madeline Gonzalez (Colton, CA) snagged her second Pitcher of the Week award.

Watkins dominated at the plate in a 3-0 week. With 11 plate appearances over the series, she hit .778 and registered four RBI and four runs. After going 2-for-3 in the first two games, she closed the series out strong with a 3-for-3 performance with two RBI and two runs. She also hit a double in each game and stole two bases.

Gonzalez was equally as impressive in the circle last weekend. She recorded two wins, a save, and seven strikeouts, all while finishing the series with a 1.65 ERA in 17 innings pitched. She opened the series with four strikeouts in a 5-2 win, before sitting down another three in game two. In the final game, she secured the sweep with a save.

For the season, Watkins currently ranks second in the conference with a .486 batting average, while Gonzalez is second in the SCIAC with a 1.66 ERA.
