Pete Yellico Era Begins against Point Loma Nazarene | Bulldogs Blanked 9-0

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Pete Yellico era as the Head Coach for Men's Tennis at the University of Redlands began Saturday against Point Loma Nazarene.

The Maroon and Grey fell behind 3-0 after doubles with the No. 2 and No. 3 teams falling 8-2.  The top squad of Stefan Hester (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) and Andrew Yip (Honolulu, HI) put together an opportunity though for a point but couldn't stay in striking distance as they fell 8-4.

Luke Watson (Bury St. Edmunds, UK) and Donovan Lilov (San Diego, CA) were the first two off the courts in singles falling at No. 4 (6-2, 6-1) and No. 3 (6-0, 6-2), respectively.  The match was clinched by the Sea Lions at No. 5 as Nathan Bernardo (Santa Ana, CA) went down 6-1, 6-2 giving PLNU the decisive fifth point.

Yip was moved into the top spot for the match and he proved tough for Davis getting broken once each set to fall 6-3, 6-4.  Cameron McDaniel (Laguna Niguel, CA) saw his first playing time at No. 6, but couldn't get any momentum falling 6-2, 6-2.

The match of the day belonged to Hester at No. 2 who went the distance with Strassburger.  After taking the opening frame 6-4 was unable to clinch it as the second set went to a tiebreaker eventually going in favor of the Sea Lions 7-6 (7).  Then in the ten point breaker Strassburger was able to grab a late break to pull out the come from behind win 10-6.          

Redlands returns to the courts on Friday, March 4 when they host Christopher Newport beginning at 2:00pm.
