Five Redlands Men's Soccer players receive All-SCIAC honors

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced their 2022 All-SCIAC teams this week with the University of Redlands earning five all-conference selections, with two on 1st Team and three on the 2nd Team. Defender Peyton Menti (Seattle, WA) and forward Ethan Kovach (Las Vegas, NV) were named to the All-SCIAC 1st Team and defender Skylar Darwen (Los Angeles, CA) along with midfielders Jarette Alexis Barajas (San Jose, CA) and Joseph Parra (West Covina, CA) landed on the 2nd Team.

This marks the 41st-straight season (minus 2020 due to COVID-19) the Bulldogs have had at least one member on the All-SCIAC team. The last time there was not a Bulldog represented was in 1980. This is also the 23rd-straight season with multiple 1st Team selections dating back to the 1998 season when Jon Bailey was the lone Bulldog representative.

Menti finished his tenure with the Bulldogs posting a career offensive season in which he had four of his six career assists as a starting centerback. Three of the four assists came in the final four games with a career-high two-assist game coming in a 5-0 win against La Verne (October 20). As a defender he helped Redlands post five shutouts along with being named the SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Week (October 10). Menti has now made an All-SCIAC team in three of his four years with a 1st Team appearance in 2019 and 2022 and 2nd Team honors in 2021.

Kovach joins Menti on the 1st Team serving as the Bulldogs' primary goal-scorer this season as he posted a career-high six goals and matched his career total of two game-winning connections coming against Caltech (September 17) and Whittier College (October 22). With the All-SCIAC selection, Kovach has now made it all three of his eligible years. He made the 2nd Team in 2019 and the 1st Team in 2021.

Darwen has two career goals and three assists in three seasons as a Bulldog with both of his goals and two of his assists coming this year. He had six points and 12 shots with seven of them on-goal as an outside back. Darwen assisted on two of the three Bulldog goals against Pomona-Pitzer (September 28) and was the lone goal scorer in a 1-1 tie against Cal Lutheran in the Quarterfinals of the SCIAC Tournament. Darwen's selection to an All-SCIAC team is the first of his career.

For the first time in his three-year career, Barajas finds himself on the 2nd Team and was an integral part of the Bulldogs offense this season, scoring all five of his career goals and posting his first two career assists. Two of his five goals were game-winners, one at La Verne (October 5) and one against UC Santa Cruz (October 8). Barajas registered his first career multi-goal game with a brace in a 5-2 win at Whittier College (October 22). Overall, the Bulldogs went 3-1 when he scored. He also led the team on penalty kicks, going 3-for-3.

Parra receives 2nd Team All-SCIAC recognition for the second time in his career being selected back in 2019. This season he added to his offensive totals with a goal and three assists as he finishes his career with three goals and ten assists. His lone goal of the season came in a win at Whittier College (October 22). He posted his first career two-assist game in a win at Caltech (September 17). The Bulldogs won all three games when he scored or had an assist.

Redlands finished this season in a three-way tie for third place with a conference record of 6-4. They earned the fifth seed in the SCIAC Tournament but were eliminated in the Quarterfinals to Cal Lutheran on PK's.  They wrap up 2022 with an overall record of 7-5-4.
