Redlands Men’s Soccer rolls past Caltech 4-1

PASADENA, Calif. – The University of Redlands men's soccer team put together yet another strong offensive performance Saturday afternoon rolling Caltech 4-1.

The Maroon and Grey have outscored the Beavers 9-1 over the two games this season, improve to 12-2-1, 8-2-1 SCIAC, and have now won six of seven in the month of October.

It was a slow start for the U of R getting just one goal in the first half but made some adjustments at the break before putting up another three tallies in the second.

The first goal on the afternoon came from Arian Mogharei (Hayward, CA) in the 17th minute.  Ethan Kovach (Las Vegas, CA) served a long free-kick into the box that found the head of Mogharei who finished.  In the second the Bulldogs continued to pour it on with Collin ChubbFertal (Eugene, OR) tacking on the eventual game-winner off of a PK.  Mikey Flota (West Covina, CA) was fouled in the box coming off a high kick from a Caltech defender that drew the penalty.  This then brought up ChubbFertal who buried the ensuing kick to make the score 2-0.

Less than ten minutes later Quinn Richards (San Clemente, CA) added his second in as many games.  Cayden Nelson (Layton, UT) slipped a pass through the right side to Joseph Parra (West Covina, CA) who crossed it into Richards who then buried it to the left side of the net.

But UR wasn't done as freshman Phillip Kostenko (Sammamish, WA) added his first collegiate goal at the 73:56 mark.  Andrew Torres (Oceanside, CA) played a pass to Jonathan Cheung (Hong Kong, China) who dummied it through his legs to David Johnson (Monrovia, CA).  Johnson then passed it to Kostenko who then took a touch inside before ripping a curling shot to the left post from 25-yards out.

Caltech managed to get one goal back with six minutes left to play but it wouldn't be enough to mount a comeback.  Five different players for the Bulldogs took two shots apiece, while Redlands outshot Caltech 20-5 and held the advantage on corner kicks 7-1.  Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA) and Aidan McSweeny (San Diego, CA) each played a half in the win.  Lawrence finished with a stop and Lawrence with a pair.

Redlands returns to Farquhar Field next Wednesday, October 27 for Senior Night as they host Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 7:00pm.
