Bulldog Men’s Soccer cruises past Caltech 5-0

REDLANDS, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Soccer team picked up their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victory Wednesday night as they cruised past Caltech 5-0 at Farquhar Field.

The Maroon and Grey rebound after their tough 2-1 loss to Claremont-M-S on the road and now improve to 4-1, 1-1 SCIAC.

The U of R offense continues to be the story on the season with the Bulldogs outscoring their last five opponents 17-4, which includes averaging 3.60 goals per game and 18.4 shots per game.

It was all Redlands from start to finish outshooting the Beavers 28-1, which included a blank across the opening 45:00 minutes.  They also recorded 11 corner kicks and 12 shots on goal.

The Bulldogs struck two minutes into the game and got lucky thanks to an own goal by CIT.  Mikey Flota (West Covina, CA) put a nice ball into the box, which was headed by Josh Finnerty, but the ensuing deflection would go backwards over the keeper's head putting UR on the scoreboard.

Then in the 20th minute the Bulldogs struck again this time from Chad Feingold (Los Gatos, CA) who dribbled inside the box from the left wing before slotting a right-footed shot to the bottom left post.  This gave UR a 2-0 lead at the break and they didn't look back.

Redlands continued where they left off from the first half in the second getting a shot from Ethan Kovach (Las Vegas, NV) that was saved and another rip from Joseph Parra (West Covina, CA) that hit the crossbar.  Then in the 56th minute Avery Jacobson (Seattle, WA) would connect cutting inside on his right before ripping a shot to the left side of the goal.  But UR wasn't done as they continued to be relentless even with their subs as they would get a goal from Phillip Kostenko (Sammamish, WA) in the 77th minute and another from Spencer Palmer (San Diego, CA) in the 82nd minute.

Kostenko got his first opportunity in the box getting a shot off on frame coming in from a cross.  His attempt would get saved by Julian Arroyo, but the ensuing rebound would go right back to him, which he would finish that moved the score to 4-0.

Palmer put the finishing touches on an amazing game collecting a cross from Paetin Nelson (Portland, OR) before finishing to the low right post.

Aidan McSweeny (San Diego, CA) and Seth Lawrence (Redlands, CA) combined for the win both playing 45:00 minutes, while Kostenko, Jacobson, Kovach, and Jamie Dulle (St. Louis, MO), each had three shots.

The Bulldogs return to the road next Wednesday, September 22 when they travel to take on Occidental College beginning at 7:00pm.
