Bulldogs Take Second at SCIAC Championships | Spencer Leader Finishes 2nd Overall

BEAUMONT, Calif. – The University of Redlands Men's Golf team finished in second place for the three-day 2022 SCIAC Golf Championships at Morongo Golf Club – Tukwet Canyon.

The Maroon and Grey posted scores of 304-295-298 (897), which put them eight shots behind Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (889), who won the event.  Across the seven rounds on the season, which included results from SCIAC No. 1, SCIAC No. 2, and the SCIAC Championships the Bulldogs finished second in the conference standings.

For the championships Redlands was No. 2 in Par 3 Scoring (3.39 | +21) and Total Pars (182), and was No. 3 in Par 4 Scoring (4.37 | +66) and Par 5 Scoring (5.00 | E).  They also beat Whittier College (3rd | 925), No. 40 La Verne (4th | 927), Pomona-Pitzer (5th | 929), Cal Lutheran (6th | 932), No. 49 Occidental College (7th | 939), and Chapman University (8th | 942).      

The Bulldogs were led by Spencer Leader (Oakland, CA) who was one of three Redlands players to finish inside the Top 10.  He jump-started the three-day event with a 71 that put him in a tie for first.  The next two rounds he went 73-73 that put him in second place overall (217).  On Par 3's he shot 3.08 (+1) and on Par 5's he was at 4.50 (-6), both which led the field.  He totaled 34 Pars and 10 Birdies.

Senior Jared Stone (American Canyon, CA) wasn't far off finishing in a tie for 5th.  He posted a 76-71-76 (223), shot +4 on the final round, led the field on Par 3 Scoring at 3.08 (+1), was fourth in Par 4 Scoring at 4.13 (+4) and totaled 35 Pars.

Joshua Fambro (Taos, NM) was the third Bulldog to finish inside the Top 10.  He came in 9th, moving up a spot on the final day after shaving off three strokes to go 77-77-74 (228).  He was +2 on the final day, was second in Par 4 Scoring at 4.10 (+3) and totaled 10 Birdies.   

Senior Kyle Sharp (Laguna Beach, CA) bounced back after an opening 84 to go 74-75 (231), which put him in a tie for 14th.  He shot +3 across the final 18 holes, with two birdies and a day prior posted another three to bring his total to six for the Championships. 

Jake Yim (Lake Oswego, OR) struggled over the first two days with a pair of 80 plus rounds (81-87).  He was able to regroup for the final 18 though, posting a 77 that helped move him up three spots into 38th place.  The last Bulldog to score was senior Ryan Crema (Surrey, England) who fell four spots into 39th after shooting all three rounds in the 80's (80-83-83).                   

Redlands now waits to see if they earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships, set for May 10-13 in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL (Mission Inn Resort and Club).
