No. 18 Men’s Golf finishes 3rd at Bulldog Fall Invitational

REDLANDS, Calif. – The No. 18 ranked University of Redlands Men's Golf team wrapped up their two-day Bulldog Fall Invitational Tuesday finishing 3rd overall with an 854 (283-288-283).

36 holes were played on day one followed by another 18 on day two as Redlands Country Club played tough for the top teams in the West Region (Par 70 | 6,312 yards).  The Maroon and Grey finished No. 2 overall in Par 4 scoring (4.18 | +33), No. 5 in Par 5 scoring (4.80 | -6), totaled 162 Pars, 36 Birdies and led the field with three Eagles. 

After round one the Bulldogs sat in second place, 11 strokes behind Claremont-M-S and seven strokes ahead of Northwest Conference foe Whitworth University.  But after the second round of play the Pirates were able to gain ground picking up three strokes to get within four heading into the final 18.  Tuesday morning UR got off a slow start falling back into 6th place in the field behind Claremont-M-S, Whitworth, La Verne, Embry-Riddle, and Cal Lutheran.  But they managed to come up with some clutch putting down the stretch that moved them back into 3rd place.  Whitworth though put together the best single round of the tournament though combining to go -6 as a team to shoot a 274 that was tough to catch allowing them to hold onto that second-place finish.

Joshua Fambro (Taos, NM) led the Bulldogs posting the low score of the tournament shooting a 67 in Round 1 before posting a 72-71 (210).  He would take 6th overall in the field of 64.  He was able to beat out senior Kyle Sharp (Laguna Beach, CA) by a stroke who finished with a 72-70-69 (211).  He would finish in 7th moving up two spots in the field on the final day.  Jared Stone (American Canyon, CA) was consistent over the three rounds going 71-70-72 (213), which put him in a tie for 8th

Ben Cowan (Orange, OH), who played in the Redlands "A" group had a tough three days finishing 57th with a 79-76-79 (234).  The final scorer in that top six was Ryan Crema (Surrey, England) who moved up nine spots on the final day into a tie for 28th after shooting a 73-77-71 (221).

The second unit for UR gained some quality experience shooting an 886, falling by two strokes to Pomona-Pitzer (884), and four strokes to Cal Lutheran University (882).  They did however beat Marymount College (888), George Fox University (906) and Whittier College (924).  Spencer Leader (Oakland, CA) led that group finishing in a tie for 28th jumping up nine spots on the final day.  He posted scores of 74-76-71 (221).  Ethan Weissman (Encinitas, ca) was in a perfect spot heading into the final round but couldn't make up any ground as he dropped 11 spots into a tie for 28th as well with scores of 74-71-76 (221).  Freshman Jake Yim (Lake Oswego, OR) had a showing over the first two rounds with a 73-72 but dropped 11 spots after shooting a 76 on the final day (221).  That too put him into a tie for 28thChance Mitchell (Temecula, CA), after shooting a 78 in round one was able to bounce back with a 73-74 (225) to finish in a tie for 43rd.

Mario Dino (Denver, CO) was consistent over the three rounds squeezing in a 74 in between a pair of 78's.  He would finish in 53rd.  The last scorer for the Bulldogs was Jay Briggs Jr. (Columbus, OH) who went 78-80-81 (239) over the three rounds that put him 60th.          

Redlands wraps up their fall season next month, October 10-12 when they travel to Prescott, AZ to take part in the ERAU Fall Invitational being played at Antelope Hills G.C.
