No. 16 U of R Men's Golf Takes Sixth at the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational

In a competitive tournament that featured 11 NCAA Division II teams, two NAIA schools and only two Division III teams, the No. 16 University of Redlands men's golf team finished sixth with a combined score of 905 (310-297-298) at the CSUSM Fujikura Invitational. The Bulldogs especially impressed in the second round by eliminating 13 strokes to move up two spots in the standings.

Redlands also finished ahead of Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe, Cal Lutheran University, which landed 10th.

Senior Cameron Cooper (Seattle, WA) led the Maroon and Gray's effort, recording an overall score of 221 to tie for 10th after 54 holes. Cooper stayed consistent over the tournament, shooting a 73-74-74. He shot a plus-three on the par fours and a minus-two on par fives, while also tallying nine total birdies.

Senior Jake Hollander (Peterborough, NH) finished in a six-way tie for 26th with an overall score of 226. After shooting an 82 through 18 holes, he regrouped to take off nine strokes for a pair of 72 scores during the second and third rounds. He also averaged minus-three on the par fives for a 4.75 average and by the final hole, he had also tapped in nine birdies overall.

Just two strokes off of Hollander, sophomore Kyle Sharp (Austin, TX) tied for 35th with a three-round total of 228 (74-77-77). By the end of day two, he had dropped in 34 pars.

After a challenging first round, seniors Diego Cortes (Santiago, Chile) and Dylan Merchant (Ellsworth, WI) both shaved nine strokes off their first-round score for solid round two totals of 74 and 75, respectively. Cortes ended the tournament tied for 67th (238) while Merchant tied for 71st (239).

First-year Joshua Fambro (Taos, NM) rounded out the Bulldog golfers just one stroke behind Merchant at 240 (81-84-75) for tied-for 73rd place.

Redlands hits the links again on Friday, February 7, at the SCIAC Preview at Tukwet Canyon in Beaumont.
