On the first day of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship Tournament, the No. 9 University of Redlands men's golf team finished fourth with a round-one score of 291 on Thursday afternoon at the Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena. The Bulldogs shot +11 as a team on the par-70 course.
In terms of the conference team standings through the first day, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges moved into first place with a five-round aggregate score of 1,463 while La Verne sits in second at 1,469. Redlands remains in striking distance with a total of 1,472.
On the individual leaderboards, senior Cade Lawson (Lake Oswego, OR) and first-year Kyle Sharp (Austin, TX) each signed their scorecards with a 72 to land in a four-way tie for ninth place. Lawson registered an even score on the par threes and came off the course at minus two on the par fives. Overall, he tallied nine pars on the day. While making his conference championship debut, Sharp sank 10 pars and three birdies for a solid showing.
In a three-way tie for 14th, senior Alex Stroes (San Marcos, CA) shot a 73 off of 11 pars and minus one on the par threes. He led all golfers with a minus-three score on the par fives.
Among a six-way tie for 17th place, juniors Jake Hollander (Peterborough, NH), Cameron Cooper (Seattle, WA), and Diego Cortes (Santiago, Chile) entered the clubhouse with a score of 74 apiece to wrap up day one for the Bulldogs. Cooper and Hollander shot minus two on the par fives, while Cortes impressed on the par fours with an even tally to go along with four birdies.
In addition, Lawson and Stroes each recorded an eagle on the day.
Overall, Redlands' long-range game shined as it led the conference in par-five scoring with a minus-nine average of 4.25. The next closest team was the University of La Verne, which shot one under in that category. Finally, the Bulldogs combined to finish second in total birdies with 19 and first in eagles with two.
